Jennifer Imamura '07 Professor Fernando Reimers is the instructor for a featured course in Latin American Studies. Dating back to the intellectual exchanges between Horace Mann and Domingo Faustino Sarmiento, to the study of education in Mexico by John Dewey, and to the leadership of Dewey's former students in educational development in that country, education leaders throughout the Americas have found comparative analysis a source of ideas to define what it means to teach well and for what purpose. The intensification of demographic flows and exchanges made possible by new telecommunication technologies and a global economy have enhanced the need for deep understanding and systematic comparison of the practice of teaching, of the ways to support the academic engagement and success of marginalized students, and of the results of policies designed to improve education in the Americas. The Hosay festival is even today basically East Indian Islamic in nature, while the Carnival recognizes European masquerading as an influence.
