"Because of the word 'federal' in its name, Federal Express suffered from the consumer perception that it was a government-run organization," said Deborah Van Valkenburg, managing director of marketing for Latin America in an industry publication. In the end, the image of Latin America's infamous medieval bureaucracy didn't inspire much confidence in FedEx's speedy, trustworthy service. Advertising follies such as this one have been numerous in the fight for control over Latin America's consumer attention. In the past 10 years, advertisers and their agencies in Latin American markets have become increasingly aware of the different cultures existing within Latin America. Yet, despite these difficulties, advertisers aren't backing away. U.S. marketing strategists are converging on the region as it emerges from economic and political instability, ready to tap into its consumer market bustling with more than 100 million people and an estimated $1 trillion in buying power. The region has become a make-or-break market for many companies, and media choices are exploding for advertisers. Latin America is the only world region forecast to post double-digit growth in ad sales every year this decade. Ad spending in the region is expected to reach $31 billion in 1999, up from $17 billion in 1995. Zenith Media, a leading consultant firm in London, expects the region to see the biggest advertising boom yet over the next three years, with an annual growth of 13.4 percent. In addition, the firm says that most of the region's economies are on the right track with easing inflation and rising growth, and in future years will depend more on advertising to drive consumption.

    Extractions: Elizabeth Miller, Director/Producer Winner of the Women's Rights Award A group of Nicaraguan activists produce a homegrown soap opera about issues like safe sex and domestic abuse. I first met Virginia Lacayo and Amy Bank, Executive Producers of Sexto Sentido while I was living in Nicaragua in the early 90's. Amy and Virginia were working for the nonprofit Puntos de Encuentro (Meeting Points) and producing a youth radio program and a wildly popular magazine called "La Boletina." For over ten years, the organization has promoted women's and young people's rights to make decisions about their bodies, their seuxality and their lives. Rather than seeking to change individual behavior, the group attempted to influence public opinion and social norms through progressive media projects made by and for young people. Sexto Sentido was inspired by Virginia and Co-Producer Amy Bank's success in producing live television debates around the UN-sponsored World Women's Conference in Beijing. When I first heard about the emerging project, I was eager to see how Virginia and Amy would manage to introduce controversial feminist ideas into the mass media and radically impact both their audience and the Nicaraguan television industry itself.

If Brazil were to become a close ally, it would be much easier for the United States to tackle other tricky Latin American issues, including increasing political instability in Venezuela and implementation of an effective anti-narcotics policy for the region. It would also be easier to tackle the increasing use by Islamic terrorists of the triple frontier of Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay as a financial centre. But it is not too late for the United States to change course. The administration should recognise its mistake and withdraw Mr. Noriega's nomination. It should then nominate a truly senior figure with deep knowledge and understanding of the region and in particular of Brazil. And if the administration is unwilling to do it, Senator Richard Lugar, the highly respected chairman of the Senate's foreign relations committee, should step in and ensure that Mr. Noriega is not confirmed to such a critical post. Because of this deep suspicion, Brazilian politicians have traditionally taken a cautious approach towards relations with the United States. Indeed, most Brazilian political leaders have feared that voters could interpret overtures towards Washington as a sign of weakness and of catering to American interests. As a result, Brazil's diplomatic relations with the United States have historically been cold, awkward and distant.

    Extractions: By Keith D. Ellison nextstepmag.com Recently, an Hispanic woman gave a presentation to 300 people, all of whom were corporate managers. The audience was well diverse with an equal mix of men and women and almost every ethnic group. The presenter was from Catalyst, a non-profit group that studies the progress of women in corporate America. She was summarizing a recent study she conducted for Catalyst regarding female executives; specifically women of color (i.e. African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanics and Native Americans). Most of her findings were of no surprise; they were the usual equal-pay, advancement, and business-network discrepancies when compared to their male counterparts. What stood out most and what the presenter herself was surprised to find, was that many Hispanic woman surveyed resented being identified as a person of color. Who Are the Hispanics?

This guide provides short background sketches on each film, its director and production history, its production context, and its relevance to teaching. Most of them are feature films, although all can be used in excerpt. They come from Africa, Asia and Latin America, mostly from areas where national cinema production is overshadowed by the powerful international cinema/TV industries of the U.S., India and Egypt. In some cases, films from these international centers, as well as from areas where entertainment movie production also flourishes (such as Brazil and Argentina), are included. These are typically authorial films made as an expression of cultural identity by filmmakers who see their mandating not only as entertaining but also provoking thought. Occasionally, as in the Zairian film, La Vie Est Belle, a frankly entertainment film is included, to demonstrate how movie styles cross-fertilize and to shed light on cultural values.

Lynch said that the newspapers in Latin America will continue to face greater fragmentation of audience as cable TV continues to grow. She also cites great opportunities for the Internet world. Metro Areas More Important: Another trend that continues to shape life in Latin America is continued urbanization. In 1950 only 30 percent of Latin Americans lived in major cities. That number will reach 85 percent in the coming decades. Much of this will come from higher birth rates in cities rather than ongoing migration from rural areas. With greater urbanization comes greater exposure to media. The pace of change will continue to accelerate so ideas and new technologies will be accepted more readily. It also points to greater numbers of women working outside the home and lower fertility rates in the future. The structure of families will change as well as the routine of daily life.
