An exploration of Asian Americans in television, music, film, literature, and other artistic media. Discussion and analysis of music, films, and scripts. Asian American Studies 181: Readings in Other Literatures of Asian America This course will consider texts situated at the "margin" of Asian American literary studies, namely Vietnamese American, Cambodian American, South Asian and Korean American narratives. Using a historical approach, we will explore how post-colonial theories can inform the readings of these texts, focusing on the themes of agency versus co-optation. We will closely examine the identity formation of the narrators and how they inform the current debates over identity politics occurring among Asian American literary critics. We will also address the issues of canonization and the intersection of gender, race, and ethnicity.

The role of the planning profession is to use and manage information to serve the long-range needs of communities and policy makers at the local and regional scales. The planning tradition in Latin America is especially strong, from the Laws of the Indies to the contemporary contributions of Latin American planners in international development theory and policy. Planning practice in Latin America includes management of the built environment of complex urban settlements; planning for sustainable regional and local economic development; stewardship of fragile and damaged ecosystems; negotiating contested cultural, class, and geographic claims to public goods and common lands; and facilitating community based responses to structural colonialism and globalization. As such, planning in Latin America involves proposing public domain solutions to social, economic, and political problems, for both government and popular organizations. The Community and Regional Planning Program at UNM is dedicated to planning and advocating for sustainable communities and ecosystems throughout the Southwest region and Latin America. Extractions: Advisement Guides to Concentration Courses Students who successfully complete this concentration will have the ability to apply the material in one of the Community and Regional Planning areas of concentration to the Latin American planning context. The CRP areas include Rural and Urban Community Development and Natural Resources and Environmental Planning. Additional information on the planning areas is found in the Master's Program in Community and Regional Planning Brochure available from the academic advisor in the School of Architecture and Planning. The mission of the CRP concentration is distinct from that of the dual degree program in CRP and LAS in its focus on "what is" Latin American planning rather than "how to do" Latin American planning. Students should expect to leave the program with an appreciation of the planning policy implications of Latin American social science theories. They should not expect their 12 to 15 hours of course work to prepare them technically as planners. Planning is an interdisciplinary field informed by a set of theoretical principles that are distinct from other social sciences. Because most students with humanities or non-applied social science backgrounds are unfamiliar with these theoretical bases, CRP concentration students are required to take one of the following offerings. Though these courses may sometimes address Latin American issues, their primary purpose in the CRP concentration is to provide a strong base for full comprehension in Latin America planning content courses.
