French Creoles | Introduction the man who controlled most of the new world s wealthiest colonies. In 1682, the French explorer renerobert Cavalier Sieur de la Salle came down http://www.frenchcreoles.com/new orleans/introduction.htm
Extractions: The colonists were, of course, preceded by explorers. In 1682, the French explorer Rene-Robert Cavalier Sieur de la Salle came down the Mississippi River and arrived at a site about 90 miles (145 km) below New Orleans and proclaimed the area drained by the river a possession of the French king. La Salle was followed by two French Quebec-born brothers, Sieur d'Iberville (Pierre le Moyne) and Sieur de Bienville (Jean Baptiste de Moyne), who sailed into the Caribbean and landed at what is now Ocean Springs, Mississippi and landed at a point near a tiny bayou. They named it Pointe du Mardi Gras, as the Catholic holiday ("Fat Tuesday") was to fall on March 3 that year. In the autumn of 1699, two British ships also found the mouth of the river, but the two brothers from Quebec were able to convince them that they were in wrong pew. To commemorate the event, the spot in the river where the Brits turned back is still called English Turn. (Today, English Turn is the name of one of the city's finest golf courses.)

How many people have gone over the Falls in a barrel ? Is it against the law to be a daredevil? ... How did Niagara Falls get named ? During the tourist season (April 1st to Oct 31st) by agreement of the Canadian/American Governments, the water flowing over the Falls is maintained at 100,000 cubic feet per second. This level of water flow is what 12 million visitors come to see each year. In order to provide this level of water flow over the Falls, Ontario Hydro and the New York Power Authority can only draw a reduced amount of water so as not to interfere with the amount of water going over the Falls. After dusk each night during the tourist season, the water flow rate going over the Falls is reduced to only 50,000 cubic feet per second. This allows the Hydro Authorities to draw more water for hydro generation. During the night time, both Ontario Hydro and the New York State Power Authorities pump massive amounts of water into their gigantic water reservoirs in order to top them up. Ontario Hydro's reservoir is 212 acres and is smaller than the American Robert Moses Hydro reservoir. During the daytime when the water flow is increased over the Falls for the tourists, the hydro companies draw the water from their reservoirs for hydro generation to make up for any water deficit.

Extractions: More than 300 years ago the explorer Rene Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle got as far inland in Texas as Navasota, where he was killed, on a planned trip to Canada. Thursday his story comes to Huntsville in a Texas Historical Commission presentation. The La Salle saga is a fascinating oneabout France, Spain and Britain's competition for the riches they expected to find in the New World, about pirate captures and shipwrecks, about a river missed by 400 miles, about mutiny on Matagorda Bay and failed dreams. Jim Bruseth, director of the archaeology division of the Texas Historical Commission, picked an appropriate date for his Thursday presentation in the Walker Education Center of the Sam Houston Memorial Museum project. Not only is it on the traditional Columbus Day (Oct. 12), but October is Archaeology Awareness Month.

Extractions: Nebraska's fossil beds and glacial deposits show that it once was the bed of an inland sea that was later elevated above water. The area once had a tropical climate, but during a later period, glaciers covered the land. Archaeologists estimate that prehistoric people inhabited the area from 25,000 to 10,000 years ago, based on discoveries of stone tools and weapons. Indian tribes lived in Nebraska a few hundred years before white explorers arrived. The Missouri, Omaha, Oto and Ponca Indians were peaceful tribes, living by farming and hunting along rivers. The Pawnee tribe farmed beans, corn and squash, and hunted buffalo on the plains. Although the Pawnees fought with other Indian tribes, they were friendly with white settlers. Western Nebraska was the home of the Arapaho, Cheyenne, Comanche, and Brule and Oglala Sioux Indians. These wandering tribes, which built no villages and lived in tepees, lived by hunting buffalo. They eventually fought white settlers and U.S. government troops to keep these hunting grounds. In 1541, Spanish explorer Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led an expedition across what is now the American Southwest into Kansas. He claimed the entire territory for Spain, although the Spainards never established settlements in Nebraska.

Flags are powerful symbols that signify dominion and sovereignty and express personal and political allegiance to a state or nation. Mississippi did not officially adopt a state flag until 1861, when it seceded from the United States and joined the Confederate States of America. Prior to that time, several flags had flown over the territory that would become the state of Mississippi on December 10, 1817. Although native Americans who inhabited Mississippi long before the period of European settlement used many symbols and emblems, typically made of metal and carried on poles or spears, the Spanish colors were the first to fly over Mississippi.

Extractions: Legendary places in America Magellan goes around the globe Columbus and other New World explorers ... Related Web sites By 1600, the Spanish had explored, and established colonies in, Central and South America and parts of North America. Spain tried to claim all of North America, but the French and English set up their own colonies and explored much of the continent themselves. During the 1600's, the French and English began to found colonies in what are now Canada and the United States. The French and English, like the Spanish before them, unknowingly introduced smallpox and other new diseases into the areas that they controlled. As before, many Indians died from these diseases. The French and English also traded with the Indians for the skins of beaver and other animals. Traders learned much about the land from the Indians, who frequently acted as interpreters and guides.

The students then participate in a jigsaw study strategy to gather information on other explorers. The lesson culminates with a group discussion as the class builds a large graphic organizer that reflects the findings from the jigsaw activity. Students also have the opportunity to add or make changes to their individual list/group/label information. Extractions: European exploration and colonization shaped the character of the Americas and Illinois. Dramatic changes occurred not only in the lives of the Europeans who came to the New World, but also in the lives of the native peoples they encountered and the African slaves who were unwilling immigrants to the Americas. This lesson examines the unique experience of the French who explored inland North America, developed a relationship with Native Americans through the fur trade and missionary efforts, and opened Illinois to further European settlement. Many French settlers moved away from their Illinois villages as territorial control shifted to the British. Connection with the Curriculum This unit can be used to teach Illinois history or American history, and it includes activities that develop skills in geography, writing, and basic economics.
