Now, after two decades of isolation from the outside world, this landlocked, sparsely populated country is enjoying peace, stabilising its political and economic structures and admitting foreign visitors once more. A mystical land of mountains and forests it has so far escaped the dramatic industrial development that has gripped most of its neighbouring countries thus making it a country of true discovery and adventure. Extractions: Laos - Geography Laos is completely landlocked, which has had an indelible effect on its history. The Annamite chain of mountains runs down the eastern side as a natural boundary with Vietnam, while the Mekong River forms much of the western frontier with Thailand and Cambodia. Most Lao cultivate the lowland plains adjoining the Mekong, which is also an invaluable artery for trade and transport. The two high plateaux, the Bolovens and the Plain of Jars, are grassy and planted with local coffee and soft fruit. Laos is still forested for much of its area, although the uplands of the north have been slashed by tribal agriculture, leaving the hill tops looking like freshly shaved scalps as you fly over. Logging is a sensitive issue; it is officially illegal, but this does not prevent a brisk timber trade over the river to Thailand. The rainy season runs from May to October, with heat building up from March onwards. November to March is generally cooler and dry with clear skies. In fact, it can be downright chilly from Luang Prabang northwards, and the cold clammy mornings in the mountains of the north are reminiscent of a European winter.

Extractions: Geography Laos Table of Contents Laos, a landlocked nation that covers 236,800 square kilometers in the center of the Southeast Asian peninsula, is surrounded by Burma, Cambodia, China, Thailand, and Vietnam. Its location has often made it a buffer between more powerful neighboring states, as well as a crossroads for trade and communication. Migration and international conflict have contributed to the present ethnic composition of the country and to the geographic distribution of its ethnic groups. The eastern border with Vietnam extends for 2,130 kilometers, mostly along the crest of the Annamite Chain, and serves as a physical barrier between the Chinese-influenced culture of Vietnam and the Indianized states of Laos and Thailand. These mountains are sparsely populated by tribal minorities who traditionally have not acknowledged the border with Vietnam any more than lowland Lao have been constrained by the 1,754-kilometer Mekong River border with Thailand. Thus, ethnic minority populations are found on both the Laotian and Vietnamese sides of the frontier. Because of their relative isolation, contact between these groups and lowland Lao has been mostly confined to trading. Laos shares its shortonly 541 kilometerssouthern border with Cambodia, and ancient Khmer ruins at Wat Pho and other southern locations attest to the long history of contact between the Lao and the Khmer. In the north, the country is bounded by a mountainous 423-kilometer border with China and shares the 235- kilometer-long Mekong River border with Burma.
