There are 1500 speakers of both dialects combined. Very few people in the younger generations speak Maliseet or (especially) Passamaquoddy, which means that the language will die out within this century unless language revival efforts can successfully restore its use among Passamaquoddy and Maliseet children. People: The Maliseet tribe belonged to the loose confederation of eastern American Indians known as the Wabanaki Alliance , together with the Passamaquoddy Penobscot Mi'kmaq , and Abenaki Indians . The Maliseet live primarily in Canada, especially New Brunswick, with one band across the border in nearby Maine (the US granted official recognition to the Maine tribe in 1980). Older literature sometimes refers to them as "St. John's Indians," though there's no evidence they ever used that term themselves. The Maliseet's own name for themselves is Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet is a Mi'kmaq word for someone who can't talk very well,) but today they are usually known as Maliseets or Malecites. History: The Maliseet and Passamaquoddy people were closely related neighbors who shared a common language, but though the French referred to both tribes collectively as Etchemin, they always considered themselves politically independent. The tribes of the east coast were extremely confusing to the Europeans, who couldn't understand why there were dozens of small groups of Native Americans who lived together yet claimed to be separate nations. What the Europeans did not realize was that the east coast had not been nearly as empty before they got there. Smallpox and other European diseases had decimated the Indian populations, and they regrouped as best they could. Extractions: Home STATEMENT BY PROF S M E BENGU, MINISTER OF EDUCATION, 1 March 1996 There has been a rising tide of grassroots disenchantment and anxiety among Afrikaans-speaking communities, based on the misconception that the government is not protecting linguistic and cultural diversity in the education system, and that a campaign is being waged to eliminated the Afrikaans language and culture in schools. it is because of our bitter experience of cultural domination under the previous dispensation that this government would want to assure the Afrikaans speaking community that it has nothing to fear the new, non-racial education system. I recently held a meeting with President Mandela to brief him, about how I was dealing with this situation. I informed the President about two important initiatives, the first being a national dialogue about language and culture in education and the second being mediation in the Potgietersrus crisis. These initiatives clearly demonstrate this governments' sensitive and pragmatic approach in dealing with the transformation of our education system. During my term of office I have held several discussions with a variety of political and cultural groups representing Afrikaner communities. On the 20th January 1996 I held a meeting with General Viljoen of the Freedom Front. We agreed to set up a joint Task Group to look at the issue of language and culture in education. I have already assigned the Director-General of education Dr Manganyi to co-ordinate this Task Group and I await the names of members of other parties who will be part of these discussions. Any proposals on how discussioons about these matters should be taken up, must be tabled before this Task Group.

The participation of linguistically and culturally diverse students in U.S. schools has increased dramatically during the last decade. Tucker (1990) projects that, by the year 2000, the majority of the school-aged population in 50 or more major U.S. cities will be from language minority backgrounds. These English language learners (ELLs) are faced with the burden of mastering the academic content of their classes at the same time they are developing language skills. Many educators contend that delaying academic instruction until English is fully mastered is detrimental to the academic success of these students (Cummins, 1981; Collier, 1989). To minimize the time gap between students acquiring proficiency in English and beginning instruction in content areas, many educators, both English as a second language (ESL) and content teachers, have started integrating language and content objectives in their lessons. A key feature of this approach is emphasis on active student communication on content topics. Successful techniques include increased use of visuals and demonstrations, graphic organizers, thinking and study skill development, and pre-reading and pre-writing activities (see, among others, Crandall, 1993; Short, 1991). By providing opportunities to use language in meaningful contexts, teachers facilitate the transition of their students into mainstream courses.

Its neo-classical architecture, broad avenues, many canals, and geometrically arranged parks give the city the feel of a European capital. Located just below the Arctic circle in latitude, the city experiences its famous "White Nights" in early summer. The length of the day on June 21 is 18 hours and 45 minutes, and even after sunset, it never grows dark. In 2003, St. Petersburg celebrated its 300th anniversary. The Program: Participants will take classes at St. Petersburg University in the Center for Russian Language and Culture with highly-qualified, native-speaker instructors. Classes are scheduled between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, leaving students with plenty of time for extracurricular activities. Although the Germanic people comprised many tribal groups, the name German has come to describe the people who remained in central Europe. National consciousness is especially strong among the Germans, and in the past their strong national spirit has been exploited by ruthless leaders to muster support for expansionist policies. Language is perhaps the most significant expression of a common German nationality. The German language is spoken by millions of people of Europe, including peoples living in the two German states, Austria, Switzerland, and various regions of East European countries. In addition the language has a significance beyond its everyday use. German-speaking people have made important contributions to science, literature, and philosophy. Modern German, which belongs to the family of Indo-European languages, evolved from proto-Germanic or Common Germanic, the collection of languages spoken by the tribes that inhabited the area. Although there are many regional dialects, the language is usually divided into three major subvarieties: low German, spoken in the north; middle German, spoken across the central lowlands; and high German, spoken in the uplands of the south.
