Extractions: For me, the most memorable landscape photos almost always have a sky that is full of interest, and most often, that interest comes from clouds. Give me a weather forecast of mixed sun and cloud, and I am in photographic heaven. Lets take a look at how to get great landscape photos through the inclusion of cloudy skies. Setting Yourself Up for Great Skies The absolute best way to get great clouds and skies is to always be out shooting! Of course that solution isnt practical. All of us have time constraints and often we cant get out when the skies are amazing. But if I hear that there is mixed weather in the forecast, I try to make time to sneak out. The best skies happen at the edges of weather, so getting out before or after a storm is good idea (see Photo 1). If possible, it is best to get out at the edges of the day (sunrise and sunset) because the differential in temperatures (cool to warm in morning, and warm to cool in evening) often causes clouds to form. Keeping track of forecasts, learning about atmospheric changes that signal cloud formation, and getting out as often as possible are the things that serious landscape shooters do to get themselves under interesting skies.

Extractions: The Bungle Bungles are a very special mesa or hill formation near Kununurra in Western Australia. The horizontal strips in the rock are due to layers of limestone and also layers of other rock where a dark-coloured lichen preferentially grows. The country is a maze of valleys and gorges where creeks have cut through the soft rock. The name is derived from a similar-sounding Aboriginal word which means 'limestone': presumably some early explorer asked 'What call you this there?' and was told 'the rockformation is limestone' in the local language!

Extractions: There's a saying among real-estate folks that "location is everything." Well, where you choose to set up is very important in photography, too. If you have the time when you're in the area, try to find a different vantage point to photograph those famous landmarks. It'll require some driving or hiking, but the reward will be landscape photos refreshingly different from the overdone postcard views. When seeking a camera spot, look for one that provides an attractive angle on the subject with no foreground obstructions, a good background, and good lighting. The summit block is small, but larger than it appears in this photo: the wide-angle lens makes the block look smaller, and the sun's low angle makes the photographer's shadow larger than life. Or go north on PCH, make a day trip out of it. Santa Monica mountains are gorgeous. Lots of great spots in and around Malibu. The Getty is another good spot and it's free, except for the $5 to park. There's plenty in Long Beach as well: the harbor, shipyards, etc. Head east into the mountains. Lots of snow right now. Go to Bishop. Go to Mono Lake.
