People visiting Exmoor Every year tens of thousands of people visit Exmoor. Most come by car. Some simply want to enjoy the beautiful scenery while others come to take advantage of the many opportunities that exist for quiet open air activities. When the National Parks Act was passed in 1949 it was not just to conserve wild areas of magnificent scenery The Government of the time thought that people, especially those living in cities, needed to get away sometimes from their ordinary everyday circumstances. It was thought that spending a day out in the country in the freedom of the open air would benefit people's health and quality of life. Britain in 1949 was still suffering the after effects of World War II. Since then there have been many changes for the better in people's working conditions and in the level of real income earned. Shorter working hours and longer holidays give more opportunities for leisure and for getting away from things. The motor car has become the most popular means of transport and roads improved to take the growing volume of traffic. Some people now travel to Exmoor all through the year from places like Birmingham, Cardiff and London just for a day out, though most visitors (77% in 1994) stay in the area for the traditional week or fortnight's holiday or the two or three day 'short break' which is becoming very popular.

Extractions: SYDNEY HARBOUR CATCHMENT Introduction The Panels Terms of Reference required it to consider the aesthetic, recreational and commercial value of Sydney Harbour. In order to better understand the ways that stakeholders attribute value to the Harbour, the Panel consulted with specific interest, advocacy and community groups within the Sydney Harbour catchment. The findings of the Panels consultation with stakeholders has informed their recommendations and report, and those findings are at section 15 Appendices. There is a widespread view that Sydney Harbour is one of Sydneys icons. The Harbour is the focus of much local, national and international attention, and is a place of cultural, recreational, ecological, historical, geological, educational, commercial and aesthetic significance. Water quality is an increasing concern for communities and stakeholders in urban areas, as the effects of the pressures of development, urban land uses and our everyday lives become increasingly noticeable in our urban waterways. Sydney Harbour provides a potential, and highly significant, opportunity to model the management of urban waterways throughout the city, State and possibly, the nation. With the year 2000 approaching, an opportunity exists for bringing forward and coordinating programs to improve Harbour water quality before the Harbour becomes the focus of world-wide attention. This opportunity is fundamental to the NSW Governments commitment to investigating the proposal by Sydney Water to store and transport wet weather sewage overflows in the northern part of the Harbour.

Outdoor recreation planners need to keep abreast of new activities so they can begin thinking about how to accommodate them and, in a few cases, protect resources and other recreationists from negative impacts. To that end, the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation has compiled a set of links that will be of interest to planners and others who follow outdoor recreation trends. Broads Authority-Recreation Management Zoning has already helped to ease conflict between different activities, But many people also enjoy informal, recreational sailing on the Broads. http://www.broads-authority.gov.uk/broads/pages/recmanag3.html
Extractions: Some stretches of rivers and areas of open water are more robust than others and have a greater capacity to accommodate recreation. What is right for one place is not right for another, and the Authority assesses the environmental carrying capacity of different areas when considering recreational activities. Waterspace in the Broads Boating in sensitive areas The Upper Thurne and the Trinity Broads (Filby, Ormesby and Rollesby Broads) make up two of the most important areas for wildlife in the Broads. These internationally important areas are very sensitive and need special policies to protect them. Research has suggested that human disturbance can affect populations of wildfowl and over the last 40 years bird and wildfowl numbers in the Upper Thurne have declined. Not only are the birds affected by recreational use, but fragile water plants can be damaged by regular motor boat activity. The policy about boating in sensitive areas is not seeking to curtail navigation rights in the Upper Thurne but it is sensible for the Authority not to encourage new development in this sensitive area, or in the Trinity Broads, which is likely to generate increased water recreation.

Lhtn recreational activities have been a part of Lake Hefner from its earliest days. The land on the east and west boundaries of the Lake Hefner Reservation http://members.doubleknot.com/lhboa/lhtn.htm
Extractions: Then and Now - A History Lake Hefner is a 2580 acre impoundment completed in 1947 and operated by Oklahoma City. Water is brought into the lake from the North Canadian River and from the Canton Reservoir in Blaine County. Originally known as the Bluff Creek Water Supply Project, the lake was renamed for former mayor Robert Hefner because of his contribution to its creation. In 1940 a $7,000,000.00 bond issue was voted to build the 75,000 acre feet reservoir. Construction was delayed during World War II. H.E. Bailey, an engineer, and City Manager was responsible for building the dam which was completed in 1942. The remainder of the project was ready in 1944 and Lake Hefner was finally dedicated in 1947. A 15 million gallon per day filtration plant, part of the original construction, was upgraded to 37.5 million gallons per day in 1950 to accommodate a population of over 240,000. A complete upgrade of the plant was completed in 1995.
