Several weeks prior to the closure of 2003, a sudden surge of interest in the history of an obscure ancient kingdom instantly made the public opinion in East Asia polarised and agitated. South Korean media and activist groups began spitting vitriolic invectives toward China for its attempt to treat Goguryeo one of the ancient Three Kingdoms which occupied the northern part of the Korean peninsula and significant part of Manchuria between the first century B.C. and seventh century A.D. as part of its own history. What was special about Goguryeo and its legacy? The Goguryeo Kingdom (37 B.C . to A.D ) produced thousands of tombs which range from the simple cairn to the more elaborate stone chamber covered by an earthen mound. The latter were sometimes found decorated with colorful wall paintings which are dated between the fourth and the seventh centuries A.D. These burials are found scattered on both sides of the Yalu River in Jian, Jilin province, in the Liaodong peninsula of northeast China and in the vicinity of Pyeongyang in North Korea. In total about 90 Goguryeo tombs with wall paintings have been discovered so far, including those located in China, and some 70 tombs are concentrated in the vicinity of Pyeongyang Perrin That the Jian murals are in Chinese territory is without question, but the ethnic and cultural legacy of these ancient works made things complicated due to the fact that Koreans have always considered Goguryeo to be their first state. Goguryeo tomb murals are the oldest paintings still in existence on the Korean Peninsula and paragons of the Oriental paintings of the early

Extractions: References l.Social and Economic Changes T he most serious problem Korea faced in the seventeenth century was the desperate fiscal situation caused by the Japanese invasion. To improve the fiscal deficiency, the former tribute taxation system was superceded by a new enactment known as the Uniform Lank Tax Law (Tae-dong-pop). Its significance was that the new law created a fair taxation system that reduced the economic burden of the farmer. Under the new system, only about one percent of the rice harvest was to be paid in tax. Another advantage was that tax could be paid in cotton cloth or coin as well, This system also induced the accumulation of commercial capital for merchants who served as purchasing agents to furnish government procurements and were known as "tribute men" (kong-in). P reciously there had been a system of government supported craftsmen, by them handicraft items were produced to meet the needs of the royal court and the government. But it was impossible to continue this system because the government was under financial deficit. Accordingly, the dismissed govemment craftsmen started their own businesses and sold their products in a free market. Some of the successful craftsmen became tribute contractors for the govenrment in their own specialities.

Extractions: This is a granite temple panel - one of many that show the splendor of Indian temple architecture. The Science of Architecture and Civil Construction was known in Ancient India as Sthapatya-Shastra . The word Sthapatya is derived from the root word Sthapana i.e. 'to establish'. The technique of architecture was both a science and an art, hence it is also known as Sthapatya-kala, the word Kala means an art. From very early times the construction of temples, palaces, rest houses and other civil construction was undertaken by professional architects known as Sthapati. Even during the Vedic times, there existed professionals who specialized in the technique of constructing chariots and other heavy instruments of war. These professionals have been referred to in the Rig Veda as Rathakara which literally means 'chariot maker'. The excavations of the ruins at Mohenjodaro and Harrappa (today in Pakistan) proved the existence of a developed Urban civilization in India. The Indus valley civilization is dated around 3000 B.C. Thus since the last 5000 years. India has had an urban civilization. The existence of an urban civilization presumes the existence of well developed techniques of architecture and construction. These techniques would no doubt have had been systematically stated in record books for transmitting them to the later generations as well for being used as reference media for actual construction. Unfortunately, as far as the Indus Valley civilization goes no such records have been preserved either as rock edicts, manuscripts, etc., or in folk tales and legends.

Extractions: Ancient Japan to 1185 It is not known when humans first settled on the Japanese archipelago. It was long believed that there was no Paleolithic occupation in Japan, but since World War II thousands of sites have been unearthed throughout the country, yielding a wide variety of Paleolithic tools. These include both core tools, made by chipping away the surface of a stone, and flake tools, made by working with a stone flake broken off from a larger piece of stone. There is little doubt that the people who used these implements moved to Japan from the Asian continent. At one stage, land connections via what are now the Korea and Tsushima straits made immigration from the Korean peninsula possible, while another connection, via what are now the Soya and Tsugaru straits, allowed people to come in from northeastern Asia. The Paleolithic Period in Japan is variously dated from 30,000 to 10,000 years ago, although the argument has been made for a Lower Paleolithic culture prior to 35,000 BC. Nothing certain is known of the culture of the period, though it seems likely that people lived by hunting and gathering, used fire, and made their homes either in pit-type dwellings or in caves. No bone or horn artifacts of the kind associated with this period in other areas of the world have yet been found in Japan. Since there was no knowledge whatsoever of pottery, the period is referred to as the Pre-Ceramic era. Climatic changes help to account for the existence of a Mesolithic stage in early Japanese culture, a time when much of the abundant fauna of earlier times became depleted by the expanding human population of the archipelago. The introduction of the bow and arrow is regarded as a local response to a decrease in game available for food.
