Extractions: There are indications of prehistoric migrations from South East Asia, but the present inhabitants of Kiribati descend mainly from a Samoan influx during the 13th to 15th centuries. Following European discovery, Kiribati came into contact with other Pacific islanders and the Chinese; traces of this intermixing remain in both the population and culture. Village government in Kiribati continues in the pre-colonial mode. In 1892, Kiribati became part of the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, and was administered by the West Pacific High Commission in Fiji. The islands were occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and were the site of some of the fiercest fighting between Japan and the USA.

Extractions: Last updated 13 February 2000 By NICHOLAS MALING, Health reporter Evening Post, December 1996 Guidelines to protect against a new blood-borne virus have clobbered the Wellington Blood Service - sometimes excluding half those showing up to give blood. The virus, HTLV-1, is transmitted by sexual contact, transfusion, breast feeding and shared intravenous drug equipment. It can cause leukaemia or paralysis. The Ministry of Health recently released uniform standards for blood safety. Now, anyone who has spent: more than a month in countries considered at high risk of HTLV-1 must be tested before giving blood. Where applicable, partners of donors are also being tested before blood is accepted. The affected areas are North America, Japan, the Caribbean, South and Central America, Vanuatu, Tuvalu Africa, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea, Hawaii, Nauru, New Caledonia, Kiribati
