Extractions: Program gives East Baltimore parents real power to improve kids' safety The Johns Hopkins Children's Center has received a four-year, $213,380 grant from The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to establish a nationally recognized pediatric injury prevention program in Baltimore. The Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) of Baltimore at Johns Hopkins University is a hospital-led, community-oriented program that offers parents and neighbors training and guidance to make communities safer for children and teenagers. Based at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center, IFCK Baltimore is a partnership between the Children's Center's Pediatric Trauma Service and Children's Safety Center, the Center for Injury Research and Policy at the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and East Baltimore community groups, with support from the City of Baltimore. IFCK Baltimore will initially focus on East Baltimore, where a comprehensive analysis of Johns Hopkins pediatric trauma service records shows children are at increased risk of hospitalization due to motor vehicle injuries, pedestrian and bicycle accidents, falls, burns, and assaults.

Extractions: The Arson Prevention Program for Children is a program designed to deter fire setting behavior in children ages two to seventeen. Its purpose is to reduce the number of fires, injuries, loss of life, and property that are caused by juvenile fire setters. This program consists of four different age related levels with four different sections in each level. Children involved in fire setting are often identified by fire personnel, police, parents, neighbors or by teachers. The first step in the program is to do a home inspection, which is conducted by the Fire Prevention Office, and is followed by intervention from mental health and then continuance of fire prevention education. If you feel that your child displays a keen interest in fire, may be fascinated by fire, plays with matches, lighters, or displays unusual responsiveness to fire-related events, contact the Fire Prevention Office at (902) 629-4082.

It is a citizen involvement, neighborhood and community- based effort, designed to help citizens and the police reduce crime and concerns regarding crime in neighborhoods. One of the most effective ways to promote citizen interaction with police is the sharing of information. Neighborhood groups determine specific needs or problems and then share this information with the police through community meetings, merchant meetings or condo association meetings. The police then act on this information and report back to the group on their progress. An effective Neighborhood Watch requires consistent, independent group participation. Like the traditional Neighborhood Watch Program, the Electronic Neighborhood Watch Program is an innovative supplement that is aimed at reducing crime in the community at the grass roots level. Safety messages will be sent to participating e-mail recipients. Citizens can be alerted to criminal activity in their neighborhoods. Businesses can be notified of scam artists, thieves, and other criminal activity in the area. By being aware of potential crimes and being willing to look out for anothers interests, the police and citizens can collectively combat crime in our community. Students are generally safer at school than anywhere else in the community. In the San Juan district 99% of students attend school with no serious safety or discipline problems. According to the district's annual school survey, more than 80% of students, parents and staff believe their school is a safe place. Sometimes community problems do come to school with students. The district has and continues to develop programs to promote student health and safety. *Safe Schools Law Enforcement Partnership This program, which began in 1988, involves 6 dedicated Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies working each school day with San Juan schools on prevention and enforcement activities. Through this program the Sheriff's Department drug detection dogs are available to be used at San Juan schools. The program also provides speakers for parent groups. For more information about the San Juan Safe Schools Program *Safe School Teams In 1994, San Juan was one of the first districts in the state to work with the Attorney General's Office on a model program to establish safety teams at each school which include the principal, parents, students, teachers, other school staff, and community members. Several times a year school teams meet as a group - the San Juan Safe Schools Task Force. Task Force meetings provide each school team with updated safety information and training. The district has established a Safe Schools Resource Center which makes safety information, videos and other material available to all school safety teams. In addition, the district provides special safety training for staff, for example first-aid training.
