Extractions: Kitchen Safety For Young Children The kitchen can be a dangerous place for young kids. It is important to carefully supervise your child in the kitchen as he or she begins to walk and become curious. In daycare centers it is important that infants and toddlers be restricted from being in the kitchen. Prevention is the key to avoid injuries, burns, and even fatality. The following items are ways to protect your child and the children in your care, in the kitchen from the oven, microwave, and appliances. Oven and Ranges It is important to keep pot handles turned in towards the back of the stove. This will prevent a child from grabbing onto the handle and pulling the pot onto themselves. Hot items should be kept at a safe distance from children by using highchairs, child safety gates, and playpens. Check to see where they are before you move a hot or heavy item. If toddlers are present, tablecloths and placemats should be removed because they can pull everything down on top of themselves. Be sure that children cannot climb onto cabinets, counters, or rangetops. Children should be kept out of the kitchen when the oven is being used. The oven door could burn the child as they lean or fall against it especially if they grab onto the door as they are learning to walk. They may be unable to let go and will get burned.

HURRICANE PATHS FLYING INTO THE EYE OF A HURRICANE A monster storm with 150-mile- (241-kilometer-) an-hour winds churns west across the Atlantic Ocean. Scientists at the National Hurricane Center in Miami have tracked it for days using satellite images. Now they're worried it may threaten the United States. It's time for the "hurricane hunters" to go to work! All ships and airplanes have been warned away from this monster. But two four-engine airplanes, each carrying a flight crew and several scientists, now head toward the storm. Their mission? To collect data inside the hurricane that will tell meteorologists where the storm is going, when it will get there, and how violent it will be. As the planes struggle toward the eye, the pilots fight intense updrafts and downdrafts. The hurricane pelts the planes with rain and hail. Static electricity builds up and then discharges with a flash and a loud bang, causing the crew's hair to literally stand on end. "About the last 15 to 20 miles (24 to 32 kilometers) we get into the eye wall," says Greg Bast, a flight engineer, whose job it is to keep the plane's systems operating properly. "That's where we get banged around a lot."

Extractions: Safety tips whilst working. Most people can do with making extra money. Here are some Streetwise tips on earning money safely and without problems . . . 1. Read the job ads in your local paper. Keep a look out for signs in your local shop windows asking for part-time help. Make sure that the ad makes it clear what you will be doing. Vague advertisements can spell danger. It may be worth calling in on shops where you know the staff and asking if they need anyone. Be choosy. Stay away from places which make you uncomfortable or nervous. If you're visiting shops, don't go alone: take a friend or, even better, an adult you trust. 2. Newsagents' windows. People sometimes advertise odd jobs on cards here. If you spot a possible job this way, ring the number given and find out as much as you can about the job over the phone. If the person wants to arrange an interview, take along an adult you trust - preferably the person who normally looks after you, and if the employer offers you the job over the phone, don't rush in. Say you'd like to bring this adult along to meet them and discuss the work first. Honest employers won't be put off by you involving a responsible adult. Talk to your family or the people who look after you about anything you're considering and never go to strange addresses alone.
Extractions: How Can the Moon Affect Tides? Dont believe everything you hear, especially around marinas and bait stores where the "old salts" spin their yarns. When you hear boaters referring to ebb tide, or incoming tide or outgoing tide, it may be familiar language, but it is not accurate. Tide does not ebb, nor does it come in or go out. First of all, tide is the rise and fall of water caused by gravitational forces of the moon and sun on the oceans of the earth. Generally speaking, tidal cycles contain two high tides and two low tides each day. During the time between high and low tide there will obviously be current flow. The time between high and low tides is a little over 6 hours and the entire tidal cycle repeats itself approximately fifty minutes later each day. So if you know that low tide is at 0800 today you can estimate that it will be at 0850 tomorrow.
