Extractions: April de Angelis's bawdy comedy Playhouse Creatures , which tells the backstage story of the first female performers on the Restoration stage (including Nell Gwynne) who had to walk the fine line between fame and infamy, is in repertoire at the Theatre By The Lake in Keswick until 4th November. The company comprises Pamela Buchner, Janet Jefferies, Elizabeth Marsh, Vivienne Rowdon and Anna Stranak, directed by Stefan Escreet. The National Theatre has broken its attendance record in the 2004/2005 season, playing to 94% capacity, amounting to nearly 800,000 people, 58,000 of them first time visitors. During the year ending in March, the company mounted 17 new main house productions and won 22 major awards. Financially, the National also experienced one of its most successful years ever, with an operating surplus of £674,000. Its Arts Council grant for 2004/2005 was nearly £15.9m, box office income £13.1m and other self-generated income £11.4m. This is partly due to the extended runs of Alan Bennett's The History Boys , which will probably be the most successful play in the theatre's history, and the second season of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials . This golden scenario is unlikely to be repeated however, as productions in the current year have been both less well received critically and less well attended.

Boards Orlando Introduction Planning a Trip For Foreign Visitors ... Index The city continues to dream of getting financing for a multimillion-dollar world-class performing arts center. While you're holding your breath, there are two existing facilities, both of which fall under the wand of Orlando Centroplex. Dinner Theater Outside the Disney zone, Orlando has an active dinner theater scene, but keep in mind that the city is a family destination and the dinner shows are very reflective of that. You won't find sophisticated offerings like those in major cultural centers such as New York, London, or Paris. Most of the local dinner shows focus on pleasing the kids, so if you're looking for fun, you'll find it; but if you want critically acclaimed entertainment, look elsewhere. You also won't find four-star food; but dinners are certainly palatable enough, with some a bit better than others. Attending a show is considered by many to be a quintessential Orlando experience, and if you arrive with the right attitude, you'll most likely have an enjoyable evening. Your children certainly will. Note: Discount coupons to the dinner shows below can often be found inside the tourist magazines that are distributed in gas stations and tourist information centers; you'll also find them in many non-Disney hotel lobbies and sometimes on the listed websites.

This article was originally published in Gifted Education Press Quarterly (Fall 2002,Volume Sixteen, Number Four), published by Gifted Education Press, Manassas, Virginia What special considerations do parents and educators need to make when planning performing arts instruction for exceptionally and profoundly gifted (hereafter referred to as eg/pg) children? Such children are marked by specific traits, about which parents and educators must be familiar in order to properly accommodate this special population. Recent neurological research points to radical differences in the brains of exceptionally gifted children. In his paper, The Gifted Brain, Australian researcher, John Geake quotes Alexander, OBoyle, and Benbow as saying, gifted subjects may have an unusually rapid and high level development of interhemispheric interactions the area where structural and functional development are most closely related are the frontal lobes-gifted adolescents [13 years old] and college students [20 years old] have a similar level of brain maturation in these regions.
