Extractions: KiteCD Ways We Can Help ... Why Have An Earth Day? Each year on April 22 the United States celebrates Earth Day. This is a day intended to call our attention to the health and well being of our planet. Learning about our planet and the way that we affect its overall condition is called ecology. Because each persons actions affect our environment, directly or indirectly, Earth Day reminds us that we are all responsible for keeping our world clean and using its resources wisely. Earth Day focuses on three main goals: to reduce, to reuse, and to recycle. The most important of these is to reduce. By reducing our use of the Earths resources and by reducing our use of products which can harm our planet, such as insecticides, plastics, and aerosol sprays, we help to keep our environment clean. [top] [home] The word ecology was coined in the 1800s. It stems from the Greek word for "house," and represents the study of earth as one large house of inhabitants. Planet Earths inhabitants are either producers, consumers, or decomposers. The producers are plants, which use the sun to make food and oxygen. Consumers are the species which eat producers, other consumers, or decomposers. Humans are consumers. Decomposers eat the remains of nature and release the elements of those organisms back into the environment. Decomposers include bacteria, fungi, and earthworms.
Extractions: Let students know that they are going to work individually or in groups to write and illustrate short books that explain to younger children how the animals that inhabit coral reefs are uniquely suited to their environment. Before beginning work on their books, have students conduct research on the types of organisms that live in the reefs. They may use the materials you have provided, encyclopedias, books and periodicals from the library, or the Internet. Students should focus on finding out how specific animals that live in the reefs are adapted to their environments. (Adaptations may include camouflage, symbiosis, defenses, hunting strategies, and so on.)
