Extractions: EDO-CS-03-07 December 2003 What are Communicative and Visual Arts in Literacy Instruction? The purpose of this Digest is to explore the evidence suggesting the effectiveness of literacy instruction through communicative and visual arts. According to Flood, Heath, and Lapp (1997), visual arts includes everything from dramatic performances, comic books, to television viewing. The communicative arts, such as reading, writing, and speaking, exist as integrated elements in the visual arts. These authors argued that using visual arts in literacy instruction motivates students to become involved in the communicative arts. By taking visual arts away from the communicative arts in the classroom, schools would grow away from the fundamental skills that adults need to function in society. Television and Multiple Media as Instructional Tools For older students, incorporating TV into reading instruction may motivate reluctant readers and result in improved reading fluency. Koskinen, Wilson, and Jensema (1985) used closed-captioned television programs with 35 second through sixth grade remedial readers in an exploratory study. The anecdotal evidence indicated that closed-captioned programs were effective in promoting the learners' reading fluency. In Goldman and Goldman's study (1988), the audio portion of TV programs were turned off and the high school remedial students were motivated to read the captions in order to understand the story.

As a nation, we must develop children who are productive, happy, well-adjusted citizens, rather than kids who can just pass a test and get through school. Since the time when humans drew figures on the walls of the caves of Lascaux, the arts have been our means of recording human experience and making meaning in the world. They are a sign of a thoughtful, inventive, and creative citizenry. As the global economy becomes faster and more competitive, these qualities are increasingly important. As such, the arts are an integral part of a complete, successful, and high-quality education. Study of the arts enhances young people's intellectual, personal, and social development. The arts provide a rich and engaging curriculum that develops students' abilities to think, reason, and understand the world and its cultures. A comprehensive arts education encompasses such areas as the history of the arts, the honing of critical-analysis skills, the re-creation of classic as well as contemporary works of art, and the expression of students' ideas and feelings through the creation of their own works. In other words, students should have opportunities to respond, perform, and create in the arts.

August 2005 Curious as to your opinion of Berkeley Arts Magnet? I am needing some reassurance its methods would be as good or nearly as good as home schooling for helping 7 yrold girl discover her own unique individuality. Particular teacher names especially appreciated. We live on California near University. So if you know of other alternatives, besides expensive private schools we cannot afford, I'd love to hear this as well. Gary We have just had a very good year with Berkeley Arts Magnet. I'm really impressed with Mindy, who teaches percussion there. She's amazing. The drama is also great fun. I home schooled my children until age 7, and then came to feel that the social environment provided by a school, providing there is a safe and caring atmosphere, is absolutely necessary for the child's happiness and development. We're a really academic family, and (paradoxically) I wasn't looking for a strong academic program in school - I can do that myself at home, teaching the children where necessary. Surprisingly, then, the math at Berkeley Arts Magnet was challenging and interesting for my fifth grade child. But it was in the realm of friendship, drama, music, that my children were happy and fulfilled. J
