The works of art weren't created by professional artists, but by elementary and middle school students in the Los Gatos Union School District. The exhibition was organized by the Art Docents of Los Gatos Inc., a nonprofit, mostly volunteer organization that has provided visual arts lessons for LGUSD students since 1973. The Art Docents are responsible for more than just getting students to do art projects. The docents teach art as a discipline and work with the district to make sure they're helping children meet the state's art standards, which the state Board of Education adopted in 1996. The docents give five sequential presentations in each K-6 classroom during the year, in which children learn elements of art and principles of design, look at artworks and discuss their merits and places in history.

Extractions: September 24 December 3, 2005 A passionate experimentalist, African American artist Phillip J. Hampton has investigated aesthetic problems and explored the effects and conditions of a variety of media for over 60 years. The exhibition celebrates Phillip Hamptons career with a selection of over 35 drawings and paintings from the 1950s to today. With roots in social realism, Hampton moved into abstraction in the 1970s. Informed by his studies of art history, he has applied a variety of aesthetic philosophies to his works including techniques of European Old Master painters, traditional African art, and the unique spatial qualities of Asian art. Utilizing a complex palette of media including watercolor, acrylic, oils, pastel and collage, Hampton experiments with techniques and ideas from the history of art, while elucidating African and African American histories and culture through abstraction and symbol-making. In his early years, Hampton's concerns centered on the urban landscape and the human form. These paintings were a fusion of realism and expressionism. While deeply rooted in the realist approaches that artists like Henry Ossawa Tanner, Thomas Hart Benton and Hale Woodruff, among others, applied in their works of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Hampton's paintings also exhibited an affinity with German Expressionist and Fauve artists like Karl Schmidt-Rottluff or Maurice de Vlaminck in their angular formal arrangements and dynamic compositions.

After more than a century of neglect, change may be on the way. Not all children learn alike. This is particularly true in Pacific entities where the language of instruction and teaching philosophy are not particularly sensitive to prevailing cultures, social life, customs, and indigenous languages. Many may even be intimidated by core curriculum disciplines that do not seem applicable to their surroundings and might be more responsive to a curriculum that leans towards the arts. While interviewing early childhood teachers in Hawaii, Phillips (1993), an instructor in art education at the University of Hawaii, observed that most elementary teachers do not have the necessary educational background to teach visual arts. They are expected to teach subjects in the core disciplines, and intuitively to know something about art. The visual art curriculum draft specifies 90 minutes of art instruction weekly in grades 3-6 and 120 minutes in grades K-3. Very few schools in Hawaii and in other Pacific entities can boast of having dedicated art specialists who can effectively address these requirements. Generally, the teaching of art is entrusted to teachers who are uncomfortable teaching it to children. Others are absolutely convinced that art is an intuitive gift that cannot be taught.
