Time.com People Fortune EW NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) Kenyan President Daniel arap Moi has demanded the death penalty for people who knowingly infect others with HIV/AIDS, to deter men from passing the disease to vulnerable younger women, newspapers reported on Sunday. MESSAGE BOARD AIDS prevention "We have to make laws that restrict those who deliberately infect others because young girls cannot protect themselves from such criminals," Moi told reporters on his return from last week's major United Nations AIDS conference in New York. "The time has come for those who deliberately infect others to die and those who rape to get life," the Sunday Nation quoted Moi as saying. Researchers say infection rates among young African women are far higher than for males, partly due to their vulnerability to older men who use their dominant social and economic status to pressure them into unprotected sex. Moi blamed the church for not doing enough to educate Christians about the dangers of the virus, which has infected about 2.2 million of Kenya's estimated 30 million people, saying the best defense against AIDS was "good morals."

Britain's revised warning on Wednesday came less than four months after suicide bombers attacked a hotel in the Kenyan beach resort of Mombasa, killing 16 people. The bombers struck within minutes of a failed attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner near Mombasa airport. "There's an increased perception in some quarters that Kenya is a soft target which is perhaps why some authorities may feel that Kenya is in particular danger," National Security Minister Christopher Murungaru told Reuters. But he denied Kenya was more vulnerable to the terrorism threats than any other country, saying: "I think (Britain's) advisory is not exactly justified." "We have taken the necessary security steps to forestall any possible terrorist action. We have mobilized all our security institutions and they are on high alert," Murungaru said.

NAIROBI, Kenya (Reuters) Prosecutors at the trial of three Kenyans charged with plotting attacks on Westerners and Israelis opened their case on Wednesday by displaying a missile launcher they said was used in an attack on an Israeli airliner in Kenya. In the latest hearing of a trial that centers on attacks claimed by al Qaeda, the prosecution displayed a two-meter long blue tube it said was used in the failed 2002 attack. "It is the same as the one I saw that day," prosecution witness Suleiman Rashid, a Mombasa farmer, told Nairobi chief magistrates court, gesturing at the launcher. Rashid was one of several witnesses to the attempted attack on the Israeli airliner as it took off from Mombasa airport on November 28, 2002. Prosecutors said they were trying to paint an authoritative picture of the incidents at the center of their case.
