[We give you] a Republic, if you can keep it. -Benjamin Franklin, on presenting the final draft of the federal Constitution, Philadelphia, September, 1787 About This Era and its Newspapers Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter. -Thomas Jefferson, 1787. The first era of American printing begins in 1639 and ends about 1830. In the latter decade a technological revolution dramatically changed the art of printing, with the introduction of iron frame printing presses and machine made papers. These earliest printed items are the products of a pre-Industrial Age technology, printed on wooden "Franklin" presses on papers manufactured by a laborious hand process from rags, old clothing, and other newspapers. These wonderfully collectible imprints are charming in their simplicity, survivors of a sturdy era of hard, honest work by skilled crafts people. Interestingly, at this time newspapers and magazines were largely the province of the upper classes, as their high prices put them out of the reach of ordinary people.

Sensual and seductive, but with an air of innocence, Monroe became one of the world's most adored sex symbols. LOS ANGELES - When Joan Leslie won a contract at Warner Bros. at age 15, she was instructed to report to the swimming pool at the Lakeside Country Club two blocks from the studio. Her duty: to pose for photographs in bathing suit and shorts. This was her introduction to cheesecake, also known as leg art, a Hollywood ritual from the 1930s into the 1960s. Studios issued photos of curvy starlets- and stars- to the nation's newspapers and magazines, and they were printed widely. The photos were especially popular at holidays. "I can remember posing with other contract players bobbing for apples at Halloween and wearing hearts on my shoes, my stomach and my head for Valentine's Day," Leslie recalls.

Extractions: By TONYA S. GRACE tgrace@kentuckynewera.com Reading a newspaper has become a much simpler task for the thousands of people across the state who once found it an impossible chore. The Kentucky New Era is among 14 newspapers in the state that have recently joined an effort to make their publications accessible to the blind. The free project is coordinated by the National Federation for the Blind. The new NFB-NEWSLINE now makes it possible for Kentucky's blind and learning disabled residents to listen to news from a variety of print publications simply by dialing a toll free hotline number and inputting selected identification and security code numbers. The hotline also is available to people who have restrictions to their fine motor skills that make it difficult for them to turn the pages of a newspaper, said Pamela Roark-Glisson, a federation member and executive director of the Independence Place in Lexington. Independence Place is a resource center for independent living for people with disabilities, and the newsline is housed at the center.
