Atlas of United States Mortality From the Centers for Disease Control, this atlas shows all leading causes of death by race and sex for small U.S. geographic areas referred to as Health Service Areas (HSA's). The 18 causes of death included in this atlas account for 83 percent of all deaths in the United States during 1988-92. In addition to maps with age-adjusted death rates for each HSA, the atlas includes maps that compare each HSA rate to the national rate, smoothed maps for each cause that show the broad geographic patterns at selected ages, and a chart with regional rates for each cause of death. These are arranged by county and state. Sometimes plots like this can point to regional water treatment problems, or highlight problems with the quality of source water in a region. Existing problems can then be targeted by county and system and solved much more readily. We have based the map on 1998 data from the States' Division of Water and the Environmental Protection Agency because the data set is both reliable and relatively recent. We have generated a series of water quality, landuse, hydrology, and environmental impact maps for the Green River Basin and the State of Kentucky that will be used in the Green River/Tradewater Basin Status Report, a product of the Green River/Tradewater Basin Management Team and the Kentucky Division of Water. These should be useful for regional water systems interested in knowing more about potential impacts to their source water.
