Extractions: History, Geology and Geography The area now bounded by Pottawatomie County was inhabited for millennia by a succession of indigenous people. Beginning in the 18th century it became home to the Konza Indian Tribe. By 1847 the area was partly included in the "new" Pottawatomie Indian Reservation of the time, headquartered at St. Marys Mission. Early European explorers and trappers crossed the county beginning in the 18th century. The Independence branch of the Oregon-California Trail was in use across the county from 1847 until the railroads came. The county was also crossed by the Ft Leavenworth - Ft Riley "road" and the Smoky Hill Trail, prior to the arrival of the railroads in the 1860's. Robert Wilson was the first settler in what later became the county, settling a claim near Louisville just west of the Pottawatomie Reservation in 1853. The county was first organized and recognized by the LeCompton Territorial Legislature of 1857, some four years before statehood. In 1861 the first two legislators from representing Pottawatomie County were elected to the Kansas State Legislature.

I can't begin to count how many times I have heard that earth-shattering statement since moving to the Rocky Mountains, and usually from someone who has either never traveled to my home state or who has only passed through it on I-70. Kansas is flat. It is a proclamation delivered as an inherent truth and almost always followed by, Who would want to live there? In their all-knowing wisdom, strangers and friends alike pronounce their opinion with noses wrinkled, with complete certainty and as if flatness were a cardinal sin. Having been called Dorothy and teased about The Wizard of Oz by people from other regions for years, I was at first surprised that particular condemnation was not part of their arsenal. But then I learned that the inhabitants here like to claim to have had a tornadooncewhen an errant, overgrown dust devil blew by town. Yes, flatness was all that mattered to this bunch. At first, I tried valiantly yet in vain to defend the Sunflower State, explaining that only in the west was it very flat, that there were hills and valleys, trees and rivers, and only the richest of soil and the most bountiful of crops. But my stubborn listeners would never accept that I might actually know what Kansas' geography was like despite being born, raised and living there for twenty-five years. Unconvinced, they would scoff, Hills? But there aren't any mountains. It's flat So then I would attempt to explain the beauty of the rippling tall grass prairies, the boundless horizon, the four distinct seasons, the breathtaking sunrises and sunsets. But positive of their inarguable stance, they would look at me with a certain amount of pity at my ignorance of my own state's geography and my obvious blindness to the insurmountable beauty and importance of the mountains. Their eyes screamed that I must be utterly crazy not to realize that Kansas is flat and that flat could never be preferable to mountains.

At least a third of the state of Kansas resembles an inner city when it comes to local availability of doctors, hospitals, medical personnel and nursing homes. Basically, there's not a lot of medical help to be had in either south Chicago, for example, or Sharon Springs, Kan. Recent research by a Kansas State University geography graduate student determined there is extremely uneven distribution across the state of the essential health care resources, specifically, medical practitioners and health care facilities. Residents of western or southeastern Kansas are on their own if they get sick in the middle of the night. And, the situation doesn't get better when the sun comes up. A rural resident is likely to drive three hours or more to reach the nearest medical facility. An urban resident likewise will travel hours to the nearest doctor or clinic, albeit by public transportation. Debarchana "Debs" Ghosh is studying with K-State geography professor Bimal Paul, who is very interested in health-related issues. Using a variety of statistical and geographic tools, she analyzed county-level health care availability data for all 105 Kansas counties in order to derive a health care resource distribution pattern for the state. She presented a poster of the findings for Kansas state legislators in March at the second Graduate Student Research Summit in Topeka.
