Kansas Action For Children The kansas Household SelfSufficiency Standard examines what a family needs to be Several key federal programs such as the Earned Income Tax Credit, http://www.kac.org/docs/selfsuff_nr.html
Extractions: Full report ordering information Release: April 13, 2005 KANSAS FAMILIES FACE CHALLENGES TO SELF-SUFFICIENCY A new study commissioned by Kansas Action for Children indicates that more than a quarter of all family households with children under the age of 18 in the state have incomes below what is needed to meet basic monthly expenses, putting the health and well-being of thousands of Kansas children at risk. The Kansas Household Self-Sufficiency Standard examines what a family needs to be financially self-sufficient, without government support, and it shows that proposed cuts to federal programs will have an extremely detrimental effect on those families who are struggling to meet basic needs. This new study gives us a better picture of the income needed to be self-sufficient in Kansas, and it documents that many vulnerable families face overwhelming challenges to make ends meet, said Gary Brunk, Executive Director of Kansas Action for Children. Ideally all workers could find employment that allowed them to be self-sufficient, but the study makes clear that tens of thousands of working families do not have jobs that help them cross that threshold.
