Extractions: An Education Plan for Kansas Why Education As the 21st century begins to unfold, KansansÕ commitment to excellence has never been more evident. We look with hope and aspiration to extend the American dream of our forefathers and foremothers to every child and family residing in this great state. The key to unlocking that door to the American dream is a progressive, quality education system, where every child enters school ready to succeed and leaves on a path to a productive future. As mothers, fathers, grandparents and citizens, we have the responsibility to ensure that in Kansas we are providing all of our children with the best opportunities for success, beginning at birth and continuing through secondary education. Education should never be about politics. It should be about whatÕs right for our children and communities. Our children do not have the power of the vote. It is up to us to provide them with bipartisan representation and support so that we can proudly say, Kansas is the best place to raise a child. During her campaign and the first year of her administration, Governor Sebelius identified education as a top priority. In January 2003, she named Dr. Sylvia Robinson as Director of Education Policy and appointed a 27 member Education Policy Team to assist her in identifying education priorities for her administration and the State of Kansas. This diverse bipartisan team of parents, business leaders, former legislators and school leaders met from February through October under the leadership of Dr. Robinson. In September 2003, Governor Sebelius and the Education Policy Team held education focus groups and town hall meetings in eight communities across Kansas and obtained input from over 2,000 Kansans on the preliminary recommendations of the policy team. Reflecting the input from people across the state, the TeamÕs final recommendations were submitted to Governor Sebelius in October for her consideration.
