Extractions: A compelling and inspiring account of Native American student athletes. Between 1899 and 1917, the football team of Pennsylvania's Carlisle Indian School rose to national prominence, competing-and winning-against the country's most formidable programs: Harvard, Army, and Pennsylvania. Under Carlisle's legendary coach, Glenn "Pop" Warner, players such as Gus Welch, William Henry "Lone Star" Dietz, and most notably Jim Thorpe-perhaps the century's greatest athlete-became household names. Together with other athletes, including Hall of Fame baseball pitcher Charles Albert "Chief" Bender and distance runner Louis Tewanima, they helped change the country's attitudes toward Native Americans. The Carlisle Indian School and the Haskell Institute in Kansas were among the many federally operated boarding schools enacting the U.S. government's education policy toward Native Americans from the late nineteenth to the mid-twentieth century, one designed to remove children from familiar surroundings and impose mainstream American culture upon them. To Show What an Indian Can Do explores the history of sports programs at these institutions and, drawing on the recollections of former students, describes the importance of competitive sport in their lives. Author John Bloom focuses on the male and female students who did not typically go on to greater athletic glory but who found in sports something otherwise denied them by the boarding school program: a sense of community, accomplishment, and dignity.

Haskell-Baker Wetlands The wetlands around Lawrence, in eastern kansas, hold over a hundred years of Haskell began its boarding school with twentytwo Indian students from http://www.sacredland.org/endangered_sites_pages/haskell-baker.html
Extractions: Haskell-Baker Wetlands History Threat The proposed construction of the South Lawrence Trafficway (SLT) would jeopardize the integrity of the wetlands, the sacred sites, and the preservation of potential national historic sites in the area. The SLT proponents claim that the bypass would ease congestion and consider the SLT to be an important link between Lawrence, Topeka and the Kansas City area. However, all of these major cities are already linked by I-70 which transects Topeka and is readily accessible by Lawrence. After considering various routes for a bypass that would connect Kansas Highway 10 on the city's east side with Interstate 70 northwest of Lawrence, the Army Corps of Engineers approved a 32 nd Street route that runs south of the university through the wetlands, instead of an alternate 42 nd Street route farther south that would avoid the main wetlands area and location of the graves. They claim the 32 nd Street route is shorter, safer, and cheaper, while the opposition accuses them of artificially inflating the price tag of the 42 nd Street alternative.

Extractions: Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1998. 145 pp. $35.00. Brenda J. Childs first book powerfully reveals the experiences and perspectives of American Indian students who attended federal boarding schools. In Boarding School Seasons: American Indian Families, 19001940 , Child skillfully uses primary documents, personal letters, and school newspapers to unveil the important stories of Ojibwe children who attended the Haskell Institute in Kansas and the Flandreau School in South Dakota. The historical context in which the Ojibwe lived is vividly captured in actual letters and documents from the schools and the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). This book provides a glimpse into Ojibwe families thoughts, motivations, and hopes for the future perspectives that have often been overlooked in historical research. Letters are at the heart of this story (p. xii), Child writes, referring to the hundreds of letters written by Ojibwe children and their parents. Each chapter introduces a theme that shapes and further explains cultural nuances and knowledge familiar to, and shared by many, Ojibwe families impacted by the boarding school experience. In chapter one, Star Quilts and Jim Thorpe, the author states, The boarding school experience spanned several generations and affected dozens of tribes in the United States and Canada. The experience . . . has become part of our common heritage as North American Indians (p. 8).

Extractions: Contact us today to get help for struggling teens There are signs that the military ethos can accomplish things not easily achieved otherwise. Military curricula are even taking hold in some public schools. In Detroit, the Charles Rogers Academy, named for a black army general, offers much the same program as a military prep school. Students of each year have different ranks, discipline is tight, and standards are high. About half the seniors attend collegean extremely impressive rate for an inner-city school. By shifting their focus from training future soldiers to preparing civic leaders, military boarding schools have made a comeback although their ranks have thinned since WWII. Of course, military boarding schools can seem more like another planet to the average teen. At Massanutten, a military boarding school, reveille is at 6 o'clock every weekday morning. Cadets are required to attend formation 45 minutes later dressed in full uniform, complete with polished boots.

Extractions: Contact us today to get help for struggling teens With the quality of most public schools dwindling as a result of increased enrollment and decreased funding, many parents seek alternative schools to educate their children. Effective alternatives include private schools whose focus is a military style of discipline and education. Military schools provide cadets with the traditional college prep curriculum found in public schools, but the quality of teaching often exceeds that found in public school. Since most military schools are also a boarding school, many times the teachers are fully dedicated to the students and can offer extra academic assistance. In addition to a quality education, cadets can expect to have organized daily study time to ensure they complete their assignments and keep from falling behind.

A group of former boarding school students filed the case earlier this year in the U.S. Court of Claims. They said the federal government violated the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie by allowing "Bad Men" to come onto the reservation and abuse them. But in a 19-page decision, Judge Diane Gilbert Sypolt said the plaintiffs didn't follow an arcane procedure set out in the treaties regarding the "Bad Men." The former students should have first asked the BIA to hear and adjudicate the case before coming to the courts, she wrote. "Having failed to bring their claims administratively, plaintiffs are barred from seeking relief from this court," she wrote in the unpublished October 29 opinion that granted the Department of Justice's motion to dismiss. Sypolt also said the former students could not rely on the treaties to establish a trust relationship that gives rise to money damages if breached. She said the "physical, sexual, and physiological abuse claimed by the plaintiffs in this case, even if true" is beyond the limited authority of the claims court.
