Extractions: Newsletter Events/Calendar Guest Book Merchandise ... Admin HISTORY The foundation of an International Judo Organization was proposed by Jigoro Kano in the thirties. However, due to several reasons, it was not finalized until July, 1951, when the Congress of the European Judo Union established the International Judo Federation In 1952, at the Congress of IJF in Switzerland, Mr. Risei Kano was appointed as President. Originally, IJF was composed of 13 member federations only from European countries. In the same year, in addition to that, 4 from Pan America, 1 from Oceania, 1 from Asia were affiliated to the IJF, which has led IJF to an international organization composed of 19 countries from four continents. At present, the International Judo Federation consists of 178 National Federations, grouped in 5 Continental Unions - EJU 49, PJU 40, AJU 37, JUA 36, OJU 16. From 1965 until 1979 the Presidency of IJF was held by Mr. Charles Palmer, Great Britain. In 1979 Dr. Shigeyoshi Matsumae, Japan, was elected President. From 1987 until 1989 Mr. Sarkis Kaloghlian, Argentine, was President, and from July 1989 until the IJF Congress in 1991 the office was held by Mr. Lawrie Hargrave, New Zealand. From 1991 until 1995 Mr. Luis Baguena, Spain, was President. The 1995 Congress in Makuhari, Japan elected Mr. Y. S. Park, Korea, as the President of the IJF. The Presidency led by Mr. Y. S. Park from Korea will hold the post until 2001. The 1st World Judo Championships was held in May 1956 in Tokyo, with 31 participants from 21 countries. Thereafter, the Championships was held once in two or three years, and later-on every two years. The World Championships were conducted with Open Category for the 1st and 2nd in Tokyo, and the 3rd in Paris. At the Tokyo Olympic Games, the Weight Categories (-68 kg, -80 kg, +80 kg, open) were introduced, and from the 4th Championships, a mixed system of the Open and the Weight Category System has been adopted. Extractions: In 1964 at the first Olympic Judo event in Tokyo there were 74 participants from 27 countries. By 1992 in Barcelona the Judo competition had grown to 437 participants from 93 countries. The Olympic weight classes have increased in number over the years. Starting with the Tokyo Olympics, 3 weight categories were introduced in addition to the open category. The categories were expanded to 6 (including an open category) for the 1972 Olympics, and 8 for the 1980 Olympics. In 1992 the open category was dropped from the Olympics, so there are currently 7 weight categories for both men and women in the Olympics. In 1964 there were 4 men's weight classes as follows: Lightweight (-63 kg/-139 lbs), Middleweight (-80 kg/-176 lbs), Heavyweight (-93 kg/-205 lbs), and Openweight. In 1968 there was no Judo event, but in 1972 the event was expanded to 6 men's weight classes as follows: Lightweight (-63 kg/-139 lbs), Half-Middleweight (-70 kg/-154 lbs), Middleweight (-80 kg/-176 lbs), Half-Heavyweight (-93 kg/-205 lbs), Heavyweight (Over 93 kg/205 lbs), and Openweight. Extractions: ATHENS (Reuters) Few countries in any other sport can expect to dominate in the way Japan have in the Olympic judo tournament in Athens, heralded as one of the best ever. But even so, the success enjoyed by the judo team in Athens will have surpassed the expectations of even the most optimistic Japanese. The organisation of the tournament received rave reviews and while Japan dominated with eight golds, judo's broad appeal was reflected in the six non-Japanese gold medallists who came from six different countries. "It was the best organised judo tournament in Olympic history," said Anton Geesink, an International Olympic Committee delegate and a judo gold medallist in Tokyo in 1964. "It was held in a wonderful venue; every day there was a full house," he said. "Everybody was happy." Japan's haul of eight golds doubled their previous best. From the opening day when the great Tadahiro Nomura and Ryoko Tani each made history - Nomura was the first three-time gold medallist and Tani the first woman to win a second title - Japan took an unbreakable hold on the tournament.
Extractions: Judo has a complex scoring system Judo made its Olympic debut in Tokyo in 1964, when Japan took advantage of its right as host to introduce a new sport of its choice. The martial art had its origins in jujitsu, and it came as no surprise when Japanese judoka won gold in three of the four weight classes. The hosts did not have it all their own way, however, as Dutchman Anton Geesink beat Japan's national champion Kaminaga Akio to win the open class. There was a brief exile when judo was dropped for the Mexico City Games, but it was back for Munich in 1972. Women did not compete for Olympic judo medals until 1992 but now enjoy equal status, contesting seven weight classes. The open class, in which men of any weight could take part, was discontinued in 1984.
