     Extractions: Pictures of two ancient sites in the Middle East El Deir (the Monastery) at Petra PETRA, JORDAN The old city of Petra in Jordan is a stunning place. It deserves its overused description of ' a rose-red city half as old as time ', taken from a poem by John William Burgeon. Petra was established by the pre-Roman Nabateans, who were formally a nomadic people. A remarkable feature of the site is that many of the elaborate structures were cut into the solid, richly-colored rock. Petra was built in an area of rugged and dramatic hills that provide stunning surroundings and a unique ambience. The easiest access is through a narrow gorge called the Siq that leads first to El Khazneh (the Treasury), the Nabatean's most fabled achievement. El Khazneh is carved into the solid sandstone. The first glimpse of this fabulous edifice as it appears in the sunlight at the end of the Siq is a sight never to be forgotten. The huge size of some of the structures at Petra, in particular El Khazneh and El Deir, is not apparent from photographs. The wealth of Petra grew as the Nabateans gained control of caravan trade routes through the region. The city fell to the Romans in 106 AD. Although Petra continued to thrive for a time, its importance later declined along with the caravan routes on which it depended. Petra was eventually abandoned and fell into centuries of obscurity.

     Extractions: Neolithic 2: (Page 233) ARCHAEOLOGICAL GLOSSARY A Palestinian site north east of the Dead Sea consisting of several low mounds. Four main occupation layers were revealed by excavation, all belonging to the Chalcolithic Period of the 5th and early 4th millennia BC. This site has given its name to the local Chalcolithic culture which is known as the Ghassulian. The settlement consisted of simple mud brick houses, irregular in plan, built on stone foundations. Some walls were decorated with remarkable painted wall plaster; the motifs include geometric designs and representations of stylized dragons, human figures and hirds, and a sailing boat with oars. Burials were in cists, made of stone slabs and covered by stone cairns. (AHSFC) TELEILAT GHASSUL REVEALS MORE ROOTS OF URBANISM The fourth season of renewed excavations at the large Chalcolithic settlement of Teleilat Ghassul near the northeast Dead Sea coast has uncovered significant new evidence that may credibly push back the roots of 'urbanism' nearly a thousand years earlier than generally assumed.

Taking into account the fact that Jordan has been making steady progress toward economic liberalization and aiming to nurture promising and internationally competitive industries in Jordan, Japan has initiated to extend intellectual assistance to Jordan, taking advantage of the know-how accumulated through the history of Japanese industrial governance. The state visit by His Majesty King Abdullah introduced a new chapter in the relations between the two countries. Japan is determined to further strengthen the ties between the two countries, for instance, by broadening the foundation of mutual understanding between the two countries to the grass-roots level through wider exchanges of citizens of the two countries.
