ACCU Reviews: Inside Java Script Review Inside java script. User level Beginnerintermediate I read, butI pity the poor beginner who has to start the study of javascript with this http://www.accu.org/bookreviews/public/reviews/i/i001557.htm
Extractions: Not Recommended ISBN: Publisher: New Riders Pub. Pages: 660pp+CD Price: Categories: javascript Reviewed by Christer Loefving in C Vu 10-3 (Mar 1998) 'User level: Beginner-Intermediate' I read, but I pity the poor beginner who has to start the study of JavaScript with this book. The code often seems to be more written by a beginner than for a beginner and JavaScript's language features are explained in a confusing order. For instance, the authors first describe how to call member- functions of the example-object 'beer' and after that they tell you how to create the object itself. Throughout the pages there are a lot of notes called Note, Did you know... and Jargon . This can be a nice feature, but not two or three of them on the same page. Their main purpose seems to be to waste space, maybe to make the book look impressive in the bookshop. More than one third of the 660 pages cover 'JavaScript programming reference', a 'JavaScript quick reference', the appendix and index. I think this is too much for a title not described as mainly a reference. The book's greatest value is the chapters about Internet Commerce (LivePayment) and building an intranet with Javascript, which maybe can offer something for the more experienced user. However, for the purpose of learning JavaScript from scratch it is useless.

Hypertext markup language, HTML , documents are prepared as text documents and transmitted as text documents, yet the HTML browser displays full multimedia information (text, graphics, video and sound). The recent introduction of the Java programming language now makes it possible to add platform independent programs to this multimedia stew. Java accomplishes this trick by specifying a relatively simple virtual machine, VM , that can be implement on any computer architecture, i.e., unix, Mac, or Windows. Although this VM does not provide as rich a set of tools as the native operating system, the virtual machine can have a user interface with buttons, a drawing canvas, and other graphical elements. There may be virtue in simplicity. Small platform independent programs are ideally suited for instructional purposes such as problems. These applets can be embedded directly into HTML documents and can interact with the user using a scripting language such as JavaScript. This document demonstrates these techniques.

All chat applications I've seen are either entirely Java based or HTML based. My approach is a good balance between both of these. I have previously used a commercially available plug-in from http://www.ncompasslabs.com Introduction I have been living and breathing modern COM for over two years now as a technical lead on the toolkit team of my company's eCommerce product. I have understood the significance of well-designed interfaces and of implementations that work well within various environments like Visual C++, Visual Basic as well as scripting. The power of interface-based programming is forever entrenched in my mind and I try to apply it to everything I am involved in as a software engineer. Over the past one year, experience has taught our industry that all business logic should be encapsulated within COM objects while ASP + Scripting should be used only as glue for these objects. Designing and developing infrastructure and business objects typically requires a higher skill set as compared to what required to actually using the same. The preferred environment for developing these objects (at least in my organization) is Visual C++ / ATL / STL. Microsoft is also promoting Visual Basic as an alternative development environment for these objects.

Microsoft is also promoting Visual Basic as an alternative development environment for these objects. These objects are typically referred to as faceless because they implement a lot of logic but no user interface. The presentation tier is either a rich or thin client that has logic to present information to and gather information from the end user. Such a client then uses the faceless objects to do something meaningful with that information. The whole idea is that the presentation tier typically requires a lot of customization while the business objects do not change as frequently. The changes required for the presentation tier can also be implemented using less experienced programmers.
