The awards are presented annually to two pre-college teachers in two categories, Humanities and Japanese Language, and consist of a certificate of recognition, a $2,500 monetary award, and $5,000 in project funds. The Award is named in honor of Mr. Elgin Heinz, a pioneer in educating American pre-collegiate students about Asia. Born in China in 1913, he spent forty years teaching in San Francisco's public schools. Japan in a Suitcase Program Japan in a Suitcase presents a day in the life of a Japanese child using visual aids and authentic items from Japan to make the experience as real as possible. Common items used by Japanese children in everyday life - at home and in school - are brought to the school in a suitcase and used to show how a young Japanese boy spends a typical day, from morning to night. Pairs of volunteers make the presentations: English speakers facilitate the lesson and lead discussion, while their Japanese partners provide exposure to the language and act as native experts. Japanese Language and Culture Visits This project is to provide a total-immersion Japanese language experience to secondary school students.
