In any case, it was evident that the coming of the railroads to all of these areas would stimulate other branches of industry and economy to grow prodigiously at a very expeditious pace. In 1812, the first steam powered railroad system had been introduced by Richard Trevithick in Shropshire, Britain. A minor difference concerning time frames is that the first utile railroad in America was completed in 1869, and the first successful railroad constructed in China was finalized in 1882. These years indicate another difference between these areas: Britain and America were the stimulus for all other areas of the world to eventually construct a railroad system and Asia was not. For example, Britain motivated other areas such as Belgium, Germany, France, and America to commence the building of a railroad system. America inspired the building of a Trans-Saharan railroad in Africa and a Cape-to-Cairo line. Asia never stimulated another area to built railroads because they were the last to build a railroad system themselves.

Students have vivid images Middle East and Islamdom, most derived from television, some from movies. Many of the most significant moments in Islamic history have happened in the full glare of the newsreel and the television camera - the Iranian revolution, the 1967 war, rise of Gamal Abdul Nasser, the Turkish War of Independence, the Nation of Islam and Malcolm X. Steven Swayne, Music While music is fundamentally an aural art, much of the sound and history of any particular piece is inextricably linked to the time and place of the piece's creation. One can distinguish various pieces of classical music by recalling the features of a map and remembering the music associated with various places on a map. What Swayne hoped to explore in this Venture Fund project is how to link the sounds of music more closely to the locales of its production. He wanted his students to be able to look at a map of the world and instantly think of the sounds associated with the places they see. Call it a musicalized map. His project began rather simply, as students created websites about musicians, technologies, histories and philosophies that interested them. In these websites, students made links to visual and audio files that help illustrate their chosen topic. In addition, students were encouraged to "locate" their topic, that is, their website would take into account that their musician lived somewhere (or several somewheres), their technology was developed somewhere, and so forth. Parallel to the development of these student websites was the development of interactive maps that direct a user to this information about music. For example, a user who clicks on Paris would find text and audiovisuals about the composers who were active in Paris at various times. Indeed, the maps are designed to be time-sensitive; borders and music information change based on the century (or decade) chosen.

Since the beginning of time people have used various styles of touch to try to soothe and heal family and friends. While scholars feel that massage originated in China it is certain that each country throughout the world had developed and passed down their methods for treating the body with the hands. Ancient writings of Egypt, Persia, Greece, Rome, and Asian countries mention the positive effects from the use of massage. We instinctively rub, press, pat, or in some way touch when we ache, feel pain, or just don't feel right. Intuitively we are applying self-treatment to try to create a more balanced state. Everyone is qualified to help themselves and with a little effort, are able to help others too. The simple understanding that humans are equipped to heal themselves, and that we can also help others, is the underlying foundation of shiatsu. If we live according to natural laws we really shouldn't have many troubles. Unfortunately we don't consistently live that way and humankind has had to devise ways to deal with the suffering that we experience. Ultimately to regain wholeness we must change our way of living. There are many tools that we can use in this process. Shiatsu is one of them. The origin of the Japanese word "shiatsu" is not certain. Over the centuries, information that makes up the shiatsu techniques was gathered through trial and error. The healing techniques that are fundamental to shiatsu probably originated in ancient China, and later came to Japan. Shiatsu is a synthesis of Judo principles, Do-In (self massage), and ancient massage. The first syllable in shiatsu, shi means fingers and the second, atsu indicates pressure. Therefore, shiatsu means "to apply pressure on the body with the fingers." Recently in the West, it has become known as acupressure.
