But tropical diseases kept the number of whites well under 10,000 until about 1740.

Indians from South America landed on the shores of Jamaica to begin settlement of our fair isle. It has been speculated that they might have been Arawak or Taino Indians. Some 800-900 years later a fierce band of Indians the Caribs also landed in Jamaica. During his second voyage Christopher Columbus landed in St. Ann's Bay and begins Jamaica's journey into the New World for better or worse. In the early 16th century the first African slaves arrive in Jamaica. In the mid-seventh century, 1655, the English capture Jamaica from the Spanish. The Spanish flee to Cuba but their released slaves become an august part of our history as the Maroons, having the distinction of never being defeated in battle by the English. They earn the right to govern themselves in a treaty signed in 1739. In 1760 a slave rebellion in Port Maria makes the Coromantee a known figure in Jamaican history. In 1807 the English abolish the slave trade to the colonies, but it takes a rebellion led by 'Sam Sharpe' a green preacher in Montego Bay in 1831. The severe retribution of the authorities creates the anti-slavery sentiment in England and in 1834 slavery is abolished. In 1865, Jamaica is made a British colony after the government savagely represses the Morant Bay rebellion led by Paul Bogle by executing over 400 conspirators. In 1872 Kingston becomes the capital of Jamaica. In 1962 we are granted independence from England and so we remain today. The temperature should be a low of 78?F at the start of the race. With low annual rainfall, rain is not expected.

I used the scanner as a sort of microscope and the images are large enough to be studied on your computer screen without a magnifying glass. Correspondingly, the sizes of these electronic files are also quite large and it will take a bit of time to download them to your computer. I've tried hard to keep them each under a megabyte. With maps that exceeded the glass size of my scanner, on close inspection, you will find that there are color variations from segment to segment and there are seams that don't exactly match. This what to expect when you scan very large documents in pieces and then glue them together electronically. Jamaica before 1655 Before there were parishes, Jamaican territories looked roughly like the map below. Yallahs and Morant were names of large Spanish ranches. Guanaboa was an Arawak name. Liguanea is still used to refer to lower St. Andrew. Traces of these older names can still be found. From 1510 to 1535 the capital was Seville. With the exception of a one year period starting in 1755, Spanish Town was the capital from 1535 to 1872. Kingston was the capital for that brief period and also since 1872. Jamaica - Brief History Discovered by Columbus in 1494 and first settled (1509) by Spaniards, Jamaica was captured by England in 1655; formal cession was in 1670. A large African slave population worked sugar plantations in the 18th century when Jamaica was a leading sugar producer. The decline of sugar after the abolition (1838) of slavery created economic hardship, civil unrest, and British suppression (1865-84) of local autonomy. Rioting, sparked by poverty and British racial policies, recurred periodically, reaching a peak in 1938. In 1944 universal adult suffrage was introduced. After a brief period (1958-62) as part of the West Indies Federation, in 1962 Jamaica became an independent member of the Commonwealth. After 1972 a move toward socialism under Prime Minister Michael Manley led to violence between extremist factions and produced an economic crisis. Edward Seaga, a moderate, took office in 1980 and restored some measure of economic stability. In 1989 Manley's party returned to power with a more conservative program. Manley resigned in 1992, due to ill health, and was succeeded by P.J. Patterson, who subsequently won his own electoral mandate in 1993.

They named the lush island "Xaymaca" which meant "land of wood and water". Of course, centuries later, this island paradise became known as Jamaica, a jewel of the Caribbean. The Arawaks were a peaceful indigenous people that thrived in harmony until the Spanish occupation in 1494. The adverse impact on the Arawak by the Spanish invasion was devastating to its existence. Through plunder and killing by the Spanish, combined with new-brought disease, the indigenous Arawak became extinct. Only a few artifacts remain in Jamaican museums. The Spanish and their slaves fell upon Jamaica and used it as a base for their conquest in the Americas, particularly of Mexico in search of the treasures of gold and silver. The core population of the Spanish and their slaves was primarily centered in a Jamaican area they called "Town of Santiago le la Vega" which would centuries later be named "Spanish Town". The architecture of original buildings is still evident today. In 1655 the British captured Jamaica from the Spanish who did little to defend its occupation because Jamaica offered no riches of gold and silver. The Spanish fled Jamaica to other areas of the Caribbean, Mexico and South America in pursuit of riches and new conquests. Before fleeing they released and armed their slaves that became known as "Maroons". The Maroons mostly sought refuge from the British in the Jamaican area just south of what is known today as Montego Bay. As fierce defenders, the Maroons were never controlled by the British and even became self-governing in some areas.

Jamaica's first international appearance was against their Caribbean neighbors Haiti in 1925. They were invited to the French-speaking Caribbean island by Andre Chevalon, president of the then United Sporting Society and it was for a three-match series between the two countries. Jamaica won all three games by 1-0, 2-1 and 3-0. The following year Jamaica hosted their Haitians counterparts at Sabina Park and won by 6-0. The Haitians remained frequent opponents and it was not until 1932 that their run of defeats was broken with a 4-1 home win in Port-au-Prince.
