The President's speech was delivered to a large assembly inside the Hall of the House of Representatives. Chief Justice John Marshall administered the oath of office for the ninth, and last, time. Fellow-Citizens: The will of the American people, expressed through their unsolicited suffrages, calls me before you to pass through the solemnities preparatory to taking upon myself the duties of President of the United States for another term. For their approbation of my public conduct through a period which has not been without its difficulties, and for this renewed expression of their confidence in my good intentions, I am at a loss for terms adequate to the expression of my gratitude. It shall be displayed to the extent of my humble abilities in continued efforts so to administer the Government as to preserve their liberty and promote their happiness. So many events have occurred within the last four years which have necessarily called forthsometimes under circumstances the most delicate and painfulmy views of the principles and policy which ought to be pursued by the General Government that I need on this occasion but allude to a few leading considerations connected with some of them.

Like millions of other Americans, he has grown to love celebrating his own heritage in preparation for St. Patrick's Day today. Since he has been in office, Clinton has discovered that he has Irish roots one reason, he says, he has sought to promote the Northern Ireland peace accords with intensity. He is one of 10 U.S. presidents almost one-fourth of them who have had an Irish heritage. According to Gary Boyd Roberts, author of "Ancestors of American Presidents," "American Ancestors and Cousins of the Princess of Wales" and two volumes called "Notable Kin," two of Clinton's great-great grandparents the parents of his great-grandmother, Hattie Hayes were born in Ireland. Roberts also works for an Internet site, rootsweb.com, the oldest and largest on-line family research site to help trace genealogies. The United States had six presidents before an Irish descendant came to the White House. That was Andrew Jackson, whose parents, Andrew Jackson and Elizabeth Hutchinson, were born in Carrickfergus, County Antrim. His father's father, Hugh Jackson, died in Ireland about 1782. His great grandfather, Thomas Jackson, was from Ballyregan in Dundonald, County Down.

Extractions: The year 1912 was a presidential election year, and former President Theodore Roosevelt was again campaigning for the nation's highest office. By the evening of October 14 his campaign had carried him to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where he was to deliver a speech in the city's public auditorium.The time was nearing for him to speak, so he strode from his hotel onto the sidewalk outside, where a car was waiting to take him to the auditorium. As Roosevelt walked toward the car a man suddenly stepped up to him and pointed a pistol at his heart. The gunman pulled the trigger and a bullet burst from the pistol and smashed its way into Roosevelt's chest. His shirt was suddenly spattered with red, and more blood immediately began seeping from the ugly hole. The bullet had come to rest against his rib cage, a mere half inch from his lungs. "He pinked me!" shouted Roosevelt, as bystanders rushed to subdue the gunman, John Shrank. They wrestled Shrank to the ground and then, seeing Roosevelt's bloody clothing, prepared to rush him to the hospital. But they found Teddy Roosevelt a more difficult man to deal with than the would-be assassin. "TR" adamantly refused to go for help. "You just stay where you are!" he thundered. "I am going to make this speech and you might as well compose yourself."
