Five people were killed instantly, and 60 others wounded. The event presumably failed to darken the day of Ted Honderich, a Canadian-born philosopher who teaches at University College London. Last week, he told an audience in Toronto that Palestinians have a "moral right" to blow up Jews. And he encourages them to exercise it: "To claim a moral right on behalf of the Palestinians to their terrorism is to say that they are right to engage in it, that it is permissible if not obligatory." In Britain, where Honderich now lives, his theories have generated controversy. A disgusted Daily Telegraph reviewer called his new book, After the Terror, "one of the worst books I have ever read." But on his Canadian tour, Honderich was greeted warmly. Following his lecture at the University of Toronto, audience members lined up to respectfully parse the fine points of his philosophical theories. And since Honderich blames the West and Israel for what happened on Sept. 11, the CBC naturally regards him as star material. On Sept. 8, Michael Enright interviewed Honderich on national radio an opportunity Honderich used to repeat his claim that suicide bombings are a proper response to Israel's "rape" of Palestine.

Extractions: As in Biblical times, the Samaritans still exist today in the West Bank in Israel. Now only a few hundred in number, the Samaritans consider themselves to be the descendants of Aaron, the brother of Moses and original high priest of the Tabernacle. Aaron's family was promised the "covenant of everlasting priesthood" by God in Numbers 25:11-13 . The Samaritans therefore teach that, while Aaron's priesthood stood in covenant with God, the later priesthood of Eli was an illegitimate one, and the entire kingship of Israel was illegitimate with it. It is the Tabernacle, then, and not the Temple in Jerusalem, which they believe was the single most holy place for the Jewish people. The Tabernacle is, for this community, the beginning and end of God's relationship with humanity. It was set up on Mt. Gerizim by Joshua, and will be reinstalled on Mt. Gerizim in the messianic age. The Samaritans believe that the tent, its vessels, and even the holy fire on its altar, were hidden away after the death of Uzzi, the eighth High Priest in the line of Aaron. While the Tabernacle remains hidden, the Samaritan people continue to worship and offer animal sacrifices on Mt. Gerizim even today. It is believed that with the coming of the Messiah the tent will be brought out from hiding, and with it all cosmological order will be restored and perfected. The Tabernacle is so sacred that only with its reinstitution can the Law of Moses be fully understood and enacted.

Today the situation is radically different. Anyone willing to devote an entire week to hearing the concerts given throughout Israel, could not manage it. Even hearing more than one concert a day, one could attend but a minuscule part of all the musical events in the country, which, geographically speaking, is one of the smallest among the countries of western musical culture, but one constantly expanding in breadth and depth. For example, on a typical Friday morning, one could hear concerts with explanations given by the Tel Aviv Symphony Orchestra in the auditorium of the Israel Conservatory or a chamber-music concert at the Tel Aviv Museum. In the afternoon, one could choose between a symphonic concert performed by the Philharmonic in the Mann Auditorium, or a performance of the New Israel Opera in the Golda Meir Arts Centre, inaugurated in October, 1994. Ahad HaAm, who was the son of a Hasidic rabbi, was typical of the Russian maskalim . In 1886, at the age of thirty, he moved to Odessa with the vague hope of modernizing Judaism. His views on Zionism were rooted in the changing nature of Jewish communal life in Eastern Europe. Ahad HaAm realized that a new meaning to Jewish life would have to be found for the younger generation of East European Jews who were revolting against traditional Jewish practice. Whereas Jews in the West could participate in and benefit from a secular culture, Jews in the East were oppressed. While Herzl focused on the plight of Jews alone, Ahad HaAm was also interested in the plight of Judaism, which could no longer be contained within the limits of traditional religion. Ahad HaAm's solution was cultural Zionism: the establishment in Palestine of small settlements aimed at reviving the Jewish spirit and culture in the modern world. In the cultural Zionist vision, a small number of Jewish cadres well versed in Jewish culture and speaking Hebrew would settle in Palestine. Ahad HaAm believed that by settling in that ancient land, religious Jews would replace their metaphysical attachment to the Holy Land with a new Hebrew cultural renaissance. Palestine and the Hebrew language were important not because of their religious significance but because they had been an integral part of the Jewish people's history and cultural heritage.
