Extractions: Saratoga Sampler Group in perfect harmony at chorus competition By Mary Ann Cook SHOWCASE CHORUS WINS: Bay Area Showcase Chorus (BASC), under the direction of Saratoga resident Pat LeVezu , won first-place medals in the 2002 Northern California Sweet Adelines Chorus Competition in Sacramento recently. BASC outscored nine other choruses to win its seventh regional championship. Saratoga chorus members include Sandy Ellis Marilynn Fulton Judy Hendrickson Bonnie Klett Pat LeVezu and Marisa Riparbelli . Three Los Gatos residents Janis Maurry Linda Morgan and Joan Schwimmer are also in the chorus. Thus, BASC will represent the region in the Sweet Adelines International Chorus Competition in Arizona in 2003. There are 600 choruses worldwide, and BASC is currently the fifth-place international medalist, an honor earned last year when the group competed with choruses from around the world. Competing in the Sacramento regionals were 125 singers representing more than 50 communities, from Monterey to San Francisco and east from Modesto to Vacaville. The 135-member BASC has delivered its a cappella harmony since 1956. Membership is open to women ages 14 and up.

Our own wild iris . . . in your garden The native iris of the Pacific Coastand their hybrid offspringcombine the toughness of native plants with a gracefulness and color range that few exotic perennials can match. This is the month to see and buy them in bloom in nurseries or at native plant sales. It's also the time to take a walk or a drive near the coast and see expanses of wild iris in full bloom (as in the large photograph at left). Of the many species of Western native iris, I. douglasiana has been most widely used in breeding programs. It grows from central Oregon to Santa Barbara, usually within 10 miles of the coast. Look for its lavender-blue to purple-blue flowers and evergreen foliage fans in open woodland or pastureland; they show to great advantage in pastures because cattle and sheep crop the grass around them. Its contributions to the hybrids are evergreen foliage, branching flower stems, and a strong constitution.

Extractions: The development of the cactus and succulent gardens was greatly accelerated, beginning in 1973, with the dedicated volunteer help of Col. (Ret.) Leo Pickoff and his wife, Lillian. They not only donated hundreds of plants, but assisted with planting and maintenance throughout the period of Erickson's stewardship and beyond. The iris garden was started in 1973 with personal collections of named cultivars donated by Professor Erickson and by Mr. Harry Tate, a local iris hybridizer. This large collection of about 150 iris cultivars has become a very colorful and popular display feature of the Gardens during April and May each year, when they reach their peak bloom. In 1975, the rose garden was begun with the support of such groups as the Riverside Rose Society, the Rancho Rose Study Group, and individuals like Mrs. Zelda Lloyd and others. The Jackson and Perkins Company and a rose hybridist, Mr. Robert Lindquist generously donated hundreds of plants, which include varieties of florabundas, hybrid teas, miniatures, and other types. It presents a wonderful display of color throughout most of the year. In addition, it serves to screen varieties for adaptability to local conditions and to provide material for outreach programs on rose culture. Beginning about 1979, rose pruning demonstrations have been given every winter. A formal herb garden was begun in 1976. Such organizations as the Inland Herb Society, the Long Beach Herb Society, the Southern California Unit of the Herb Society of America, and several private donors contributed hundreds of plants, brick for walks, benches, other materials, labor, and money needed for its development. The president of the Inland Herb Society, Mr. Nick Waddell, vigorously promoted this project.

Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers that overstimulate foliage and cause flopping in midsummer.

Other Documents The Boulder County Horticultural Society (BCHS) has received a grant from a wealthy patron, Ms. Dahlia Hedgebottom, who loves irises. This grant will cover the operating costs for the Society for the next five years, including the Annual Cut Flower and Potted Plant Show, and still leave a little left over. The board of directors of the BCHS just voted 7 to in favor of creating the Hedgebottom Iris Exchange site, both in honor of and to publicly acknowledge the donation. The idea for the site is the brainchild of Dr. Jasmine Bimini, the Director of the BCHS. Dr. Bimini noticed that the Society's September meeting was often overrun by members trying to exchange iris bulbs with each other before the ground froze. Tim Dunworthy has an excessive amount of Iris plicata 'Belle Meade' bulbs. They fill his front garden with too much purple! He wants to trade about 20 of his bulbs for some yellow irises, either Iris germanica 'Olympic Torch' or Iris danfordiae, nothing else will really do.

This, combined with their needs for hot, sunny sites with little competition from border compatriots, hinders their garden value. But specialist iris growers know of a group - the remontants - whose glorious blooms make a welcome reappearance in autumn. Increasingly, this ability to rebloom is seen as a desirable trait in new iris cultivars, many of which are being developed in America. Iris Other notable US breeders to specialise in remontants since Brown include Raymond Smith in Indiana, Monty Byers and Ben Hager in California, and Lloyd Zurbrigg, who began by working with Smith in the Midwest; later, in Virginia, he found many of his irises rebloomed.

Extractions: August 4, 2005 By ELIZABETH CLARK / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News EVANS CAGLAGE/DMN Dallas native Marie Caillet has received the American Iris Society's highest honor: the Gold Medal for Lifetime Achievement. Only 12 other AIS members have received the Gold Medal from the society, which was founded in 1920. Paul Gossett of Tulsa, SLI president, nominated Ms. Caillet for the medal and accepted it in her behalf at the AIS national convention in St. Louis. "The award is long overdue," he said. "Marie was one of the founders of the Society for Louisiana Irises (in 1941), and she has been so instrumental as a member of both AIS and SLI. She's been in the forefront in getting Louisianas spread throughout the world." Ms. Caillet, a Dallas native and graduate of Texas Woman's University, taught clothing and textiles for many years at the University of Louisiana in Lafayette. Unsuccessful attempts at raising her mother's favorite bearded irises in her Lafayette garden inspired her to plant native irises. Along with like-minded friends, she established the SLI. Upon her retirement in 1972, Ms. Caillet returned to Texas, moved into the family fishing camp near Little Elm built by her father when she was a child and dedicated herself to evaluating and promoting Louisianas for local landscapes.
