Lawrence of Arabia became a British hero in the deserts of Jordan and Iraq during World War I by rallying feuding Arab tribes to harass supply lines for Turkey's army and blow up railroads carrying munitions. Earlier in the same war, on the outskirts of Baghdad, Britain learned the lesson of what happens when armies don't pay attention to supply lines when it suffered its worst single defeat of the war. Maj. Gen. Charles Townsend landed at Basra promising to bring democracy to Iraq. Some 51,800 British soldiers were slaughtered after heading north with only six weeks of supplies and no hope of getting more after two rescue missions failed.
