The commission determined to attempt to recruit a company in the rapidly growing RV industry to fill the available manufacturing space. They were successful in convincing Modernistic Industries, a California manufacturer of Aljo brand travel trailers to locate a branch plant in Forest City, originally employing 17 people. When a strike and other financial conditions in California soon caused the parent company to fail, five local businessmen purchased the outstanding stock in an attempt to save the local stockholders interests. When the company was founded, Forest City, Iowa had less than 3,000 citizens.
