State Street brought a declaratory judgment action and moved for summary judgment, alleging that the patent was directed to unpatentable subject matter under 35 U.S.C. 101. The district court granted the motion. On appeal, the Federal Circuit reversed, holding that: (1) the claims, which contained "means-plus-function" language subject to 35 U.S.C. 112, 6, were directed to a machine (proper subject matter under § 101); and (2) "mathematical algorithms are not patentable subject matter to the extent that they are merely abstract ideas... constituting disembodied concepts or truths that are not useful." However, "the transformation of data, representing discrete dollar amounts, by machine through a series of mathematical calculations into a final share price, constitutes a practical application of a mathematical algorithm, formula, or calculation, because it produces a useful, concrete and tangible result." 149 F.3d at 1372-73.
