APHIS Raleigh Plant Protection Center APHIS Raleigh Plant Protection Center. Site has information on noxious weeds, nonindigenous arthropods that have been introduced into North America, and other invasive species regulated by the U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS). http://www.invasivespecies.org/
Extractions: Invasive species may pose a significant threat to agricultural areas and/or to non-cultivated ecological systems. Being aware of these potential problem species will enable the scientific and regulatory communities to conduct proactive steps to prevent their entry or to eradicate or effectively control the species should its entry and establishment occur. Extractions: Purpose: To provide information on Noxious, Invasive, Alien and other problem plant species that threaten the success of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. This report defines the different categories of problem species, identifies the threats to success caused by these species, recommends methods of avoidance through planning and monitoring, and lists numerous species that negatively impact the function and value of wetland restoration and enhancement projects. Extractions: What are the different types of problem plant species and how are they defined? Weed: The USDA-APHIS defines a weed as any plant that poses a major threat to agriculture and/or natural ecosystems within the United States. Although this is more specific than a typical dictionary definition (i.e. a plant growing in an undesired location), it more accurately portrays the economic and ecological impact weeds can cause. Alien species: A species introduced and occurring in locations beyond their known historical natural range. This includes species introduced from other continents, bioregions, ecosystems, and also those not native to the local geographic region. Synonyms for alien species include exotic, non-native, non-indigenous, and introduced species. Only about 400 of the thousands of intentionally or accidentally introduced plant species are considered problematic with respect to adverse effects on agricultural or our native biota. Invasive species: a species that demonstrates rapid growth and spread, invades habitats, and displaces other species. Species that are prolific seed producers, have high seed germination rates, easily propagated asexually by root or stem fragments, and/or rapidly mature are predisposed to being an invasive.

Extractions: Invasive Noxious Weeds And Their Relationship To Wildfires And Forest Management Activities The mission of The Arboretum at Flagstaff focuses on the conservation of plants and plant communities native to the Colorado Plateau and the wise stewardship of our natural environment. One of The Arboretums primary concerns relative to wildfires and forest management is the issue of noxious, invasive weeds, which are spreading rapidly throughout the west. Invasive weeds tend to move into sites where the soil has been disturbed. Both fires and forest management activities often result in disturbed soils. Where invasive weeds spread into native habitats, native plant populations continue to be reduced. The Colorado Plateau region includes many unique habitats as well as many rare, threatened, and endangered plant species. In fact, about 15% of the native plant species of the Colorado Plateau is globally rare, whereas the average in other regions of the country is about 10%.

The spread of noxious, invasive weeds also impacts plant communities and ecosystem functions. As invasive weeds take the place of native plants, plant communities and associated habitat functions are altered and wildlife habitat and biodiversity is reduced. Ecosystem functions are being impacted through changes to a variety of components including hydrology, chemistry, and fire behavior, and the overall values of our natural resources are diminishing. The rapid expansion of invasive, noxious weed populations is costing the United States economy billions of dollars annually in lost production, abandonment of farms, eradication and control, and habitat restoration.
