NEW IDEAS A third-year student in the early elementary, one of the first to arrive this chilly Tuesday morning, comes quietly into her classroom at the Montessori School of Denver. She's used to the routine: she hangs up her coat and backpack, puts her lunch in the refrigerator, takes her clipboard and pencil out of her cubby, then makes her way over to retrieve her work record to see what she has on her "to-do" list today. The work records are on a table, neatly arranged by year. The work record itself is a piece of paper on which a table of subjects is printed, headed under the days of the week, created in Microsoft Excel. The child's name has been automatically printed onto the work record using a database. Her specials for the week, including Spanish, Music, Art, PE, and a typing tutorial program are also automatically inserted under the correct day from a database. Highlights, placed by the teachers, show that she needs to complete her "Geography/History" from yesterday. The child also notes that her request to have math highlighted was gladly honored; she has wanted to work with the checkerboard to improve her skills. The highlights serve as an organizational tool for the teachers and students during individual worktime. There is room for choice within the subjects, but the highlights help to direct children to areas in which they need to focus.

These efforts typically do not receive the same publicity or fanfare as some corporate efforts even though they are sometimes more sophisticated. [Some more detail concerning the specific angle on Web technology integration in the classroom would be very useful here. If the focus of the piece is intended to be the ways in which Northwestern on the whole and TiLT in particular are assisting in the integration of technology, I would foreground this early on and then use the courses you describe as examples of how the points you elucidate below see note concerning "assumptions that may not be obvious"] One good example is Dr. Morteza Rahimi's use of Web technology in his very technical telecommunications course designed for non-technical students in communications and business at Northwestern University. Since NetDay launched efforts to bring the Internet and technology to K-12 schools in March 1996, there has been significant progress in connectivity levels in schools and classrooms. According to our survey results, nearly all teachers say they have access to computers and the Internet in their schools today and almost as many report having access in their classrooms. However, as our study reveals, access is not being translated yet into actual usage for achieving educational goals. In this survey, NetDay identifies how teachers are utilizing their Internet connections and computers and their comfort levels with integrating these tools into lessons and classroom activity. The survey also probes teachers' beliefs on the role of technology in their own professional development, lesson planning and instruction. With NetDay's 2001 mission to connect every child to a brighter future by helping educators meet educational goals through the effective use of technology, the information provided by this survey will be used to develop specific programs that address today's challenges in education technology. NetDay is sharing this information with organizations, associations, government agencies and companies interested in education so that collectively we can better address the challenges facing educators today in their use of technology to achieve education results.

In the early days of mankind, technology was used to move rocks; today we move ideas and information, as well as rocks and rockets. The following collection of activities and Web sites is intended to take some of the mystery out of technology and show how technology is interesting, diverse, fun, and absolutely relevant to our lives. Select a project for each day of the school year, or work through the collection at your own pace. Some of these ideas broaden the knowledge of teachers and some can be used with students. Some suggested Internet sites link to wonderful resources for classroom use. Finding the best way to integrate technology for students will take time, exploration, and experimentation on the part of teachers. Enjoy the adventure. Teachers should spend some time contemplating the future and thinking about how to prepare students for the world of tomorrow. Are current instructional techniques helping students become future scientists, technologists, or service workers? Are our classroom techniques preparing students for the 21
