IU President Majority of Hoosiers pleased with their schools, think K-12 schools under-funded BLOOMINGTON, Ind. Indiana's public K-12 schools are under-funded, a majority of respondents to an Indiana University public opinion survey reported. Not only did a high percentage of Indiana citizens report that school funding levels affect the quality of education students receive, but an increasing percentage of citizens (58 percent compared to 49 percent the previous year) reported a willingness to pay higher taxes to increase school funding. Support for full-day kindergarten received a boost, too, with 61 percent of survey respondents reporting they would pay more taxes, if necessary, to fund a statewide full-day kindergarten program, compared to only 46 percent indicating such willingness in the previous year. These are just some of the findings from the 2004 Public Opinion Survey on Education in Indiana, conducted by the Center for Evaluation and Education Policy at Indiana University Bloomington. CEEP officials presented the findings to the Indiana State Board of Education today (Feb. 2). The survey, conducted in November before education funding became such a hot state budget issue, is the second in a series of three annual surveys designed to gauge public support and awareness of key federal and state educational policies and issues, such as school funding, testing, charter schools and the federal No Child Left Behind program.

Extractions: Contact: Carol Brunty, 317.263.8846 INDIANAPOLISTo support teaching and learning throughout Indiana, the Indiana Higher Education Telecommunication System (IHETS) has joined the Internet2 initiative through the sponsorship of Indiana University. Founded in the summer of 1996 by a group of the 100 top research universities, including Purdue and Indiana University, Internet2 is being developed as the next generation Internet. IHETS is a consortium of all higher education institutions in Indiana. IHETS member colleges and universities were the first to connect to the Indiana Telecommunications Networkthe statewide voice, video and data network also known as ITN. Now through a cooperative agreement with Indiana University, IHETS and Intelenet have connected ITN to the Internet2 network in Indianapolis. This provides a connection for all Hoosier educators and researchers to virtually every research network in the world, opening the door to greater collaborations and communication. As of August 14 when the Internet2 connection was made, the potential for educational opportunities via Internet2 became available to all institutions of higher education, K-12 schools and public libraries in the state that are connected to ITN, said Dave King, IHETS executive director. The timing is perfect because this comes when efforts around Internet2 are beginning to rapidly focus on educational applications and opportunities.

Previously, this partnership sponsored an ongoing professional development series, entitled "Leave No Principal Behind," that helped principals understand No Child Left Behind legislation and provided opportunities to discuss those issues. There are plans to jointly broadcast an additional series on each of the principal standards, showcasing principals who epitomize best practices.
