Around & About Culver - Indiana Tourism - Northern Indiana Region indiana welcomes you! Whether you re a history buff, an art enthusiast, a sports fan, It is one of America s premier collegeprep boarding schools, http://www.in.gov/enjoyindiana/regions/north/ad_culture2.asp
Extractions: Part quintessential small town, part resort, Culver is a unique lakeside destination. It covers an area of just 2.3 square miles and has a population of 1,404. But don't let its size fool youÂ…this is a sophisticated little gem with some of the most expensive real estate in Indiana. Million-dollar homes line the shores of beautiful Lake Maxinkuckee (a.k.a. Lake Max), the second largest lake in Indiana. Culver has been a summer resort area since the mid-1800s, owing primarily to the presence of one very exclusive high school, The Culver Academies (1300 Academy Road, 800.5.CULVER, www.culver.org ). It is one of America's premier college-prep boarding schools, attracting students from around the world. Some of the more famous graduates include George Steinbrenner, principal owner of the New York Yankees, actors Hal Holbrook and Jonathan Winters, and racecar driver Roger Penske. Located on 1,800 wooded acres on the shore of Lake Maxinkuckee, the Culver Academies began as a military institution in 1894. Its military heritage is easy to see in the buildings' turrets and parapets. Feel free to stroll the grounds yourself, or better yet, call ahead and schedule a tour with one of the boarding school students. On Sundays, there are student marches held on the parade grounds. But these are not protest marches: these are precision military marches that include silent drill teams and equestrian troops.

For highly gifted children? But there are few answers. This list attempts to be an answer, but comes with many caveats. First and foremost, schools are listed here by either their own or parent recommendations - this listing is in no way a recommendation for any specific school for a specific student. Some of these schools are public, some are private. Some test very strictly for gifted or highly gifted students; others are very specialized in their academics, and therefore draw such students without testing explicitly for the gifted. That said, at least this list is a beginning, a list of a few schools where at least some of our children can find a stimulating education, among other children like themselves. Extractions: Ninth President Of Sweet Briar College Founder's Day at Sweet Briar College October 3, 1996 Recently, I have become very interested in the history of women's education. One reason, of course, is that I have just come to Sweet Briar, and am steeped in the wonderful history of this college, and of its Founder, Indiana Fletcher Williams. Another is that I have moved into Sweet Briar House (which I hope you will visit this evening), and I keep an eye out for the ghost of Daisy, in whose honor Miss Indie founded the College. I often read in the room in which, as nearly as I can figure out, Daisy went to write letters, to study her Italian or her German, or to "get" her botany lesson, and in which she wrote a little diary during 1882, the year she was fourteen. The diary chronicles her days, her school assignments, her music lessons, but it doesn't tell us anything of substance about that school or those lessons, so I've become curious. Still another reason for my recent interest in women's education in the South is that I have been spending time with some draft novels that another Southerner, Mary Boykin Miller Chesnut, left in manuscript, and that I have been preparing for publication. One of them, written in about 1876, is an autobiographical piece entitled
