Illinois libraries have unlimited use of OCLC cataloging, resource sharing, content management and FirstSearch reference services under terms of a new three-year agreement. Services will support and be supported by the Statewide Illinois Library Catalog (SILC), a group online union catalog created by Illinois libraries and OCLC that gives all Illinois citizens access to the more than 55 million items held in libraries throughout the state. âThe Statewide Illinois Library Catalog represents the culmination of much hard work, persistence and determination on the part of many individuals,â said Jean Wilkins, Director of the Illinois State Library. âI am excitedâand Iâm confident librarians will be excitedâabout SILC because this new tool is available to everyone and offers unlimited searching. Our patrons will benefit enormously because they will have access to more information available through the rich resources of Illinois libraries.â âIllinois library leaders have been partners with OCLC in developing the group services concept, and have been instrumental in moving the concept forward into a viable solution to a variety of challenges faced by libraries of all types and sizes,â said Phyllis B. Spies, Vice President, OCLC Collection Management Services. âFrom high-quality cataloging, to statewide unlimited access to resources, to predictability in pricing, Illinois is a model for libraries interested in group services.â
