Extractions: Since it is Iditarod time again, I thought it might be nice to relive those exciting days in 1994 when Malamutes ran the trail and proved that the breed could still do what it originally had been bred to do. Nancy Russell, owner of Storm Kloud Kennel in Sussex, Wisconsin, dreamed of having an Iditarod team ever since the race started in 1973. Nancy met musher Jamie Nelson of Togo, Minnesota, at a freight race in Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, in 1987. Shortly after, she sent two dogs to Jamie to be trained as lead dogs. In 1989, Nancy took a litter of six puppies to Jamie to develop into a team for promotional purposes. Jamie was impressed with the working ability of the Malamutes and the idea of an Iditarod team became a real possibility. By the fall of 1993, Jamie had 20 Malamutes in training and finally decided to enter the race. Because of the lateness of this decision, it was not possible to obtain commercial sponsors, so money was raised through mile sponsorships, the Alaskan Malamute Club of America, and several all-breed dog clubs. The remainder was paid by Storm Kloud Kennel. (All ages and weights are those at the time of the Iditarod.)

Race officials decided to drop the last leg of the route between Anvik and Shageluk late Friday night after trail breaking crews encountered impassable conditions, Iditarod executive director Stan Hooley said Saturday. "Most of the stretch between Anvik and Shageluk is very icy with no snow cover," Hooley said. "There's really no way to navigate it." Race Marshal Mark Nordman said organizers immediately notified leading mushers, including Jeff King, Norwegian Robert Sorlie, Ramy Brooks and defending champion Martin Buser. By Saturday morning, the remaining field of 56 mushers had been notified. "The reaction has been great," Nordman said at the Anvik checkpoint, the new turnaround site of the race. "I think the mushers trust me, so when I make a call saying this isn't safe, they say 'Fine."'

Extractions: Anchorage 2001 Originally, the trail served as a supply route for materials from the coastal towns of Seward and Knik to the gold fields and camps in Northwest Alaska in the early 1900's. Mushers hauled mail and supplies to towns such as Iditarod and Nome and brought out just-mined gold. In 1925, it gained international fame when a team of mushers and dogs raced against time and the elements to relay diphtheria serum to Nome. The Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race originated in 1973 to commemorate this life-saving trek. click here to learn about The History of the Iditarod Trail and Race Today, the race has grown into an international Alaska, Canada, the lower 48, Europe and Japan and South America. The youngest musher ever to race was 18 years old, the oldest was 86 years old. Sled dog racing is the only professional sport where men and women compete equally; there are no men's and women's divisions. In 1985 Libby Riddles was the first woman to win the Iditarod. Susan Butcher won the next 3 consecutive years and again in 1990. A popular saying during the 1980's was "Alaska, where men are men, and women win the Iditarod".

Extractions: Lucky Husky opened its gate to visitors in the summer of 1992 with kennel tours and sled dog demonstrations. In the winter of 1994 dogmushing tours and dog sled rides were added and the operation became a year round visitor oriented business. The kennel was named after Lucky who broke his leg as a puppy, endured numerous complications with his foot and ended up with an amputated toe. With his incredible spirit and happy go lucky attitude he lead Ruth's racing team, together with Charlie, to numerous victories on the sprint racing track. He and Charlie were the main studs in the kennel and while some of their offspring are making tracks on the Iditarod Trail, others "tear up" the racing trails in Europe.

March 28 - The Outdoor Life Network crew recently spent a fair amount of time at Happy Trails, filming the vet check on dogs and also Martin's checkup at the doctor. We don't know how much will end up on the cutting room floor, they took a huge amount of footage. Darcy Marsh, who has covered Iditarod more than anyone else, was the chief director in the field. He traveled the trail on a snowmachine with his cameras. Much of the Iditarod footage over the years, including the old Wide World of Sports specials, was seen through Darcy's eyes. We were very excited to see him back on the trail. Joe Runyan worked incredibly hard to keep track of the race and provide the dog musher and historical expertise that will, hopefully, give the show depth. OLN will start airing the program on April 2nd. The '05 Iditarod continues to garner news. Many folks along the trail had opinions about the young Rachel Scodoris. Long time Alaskan resident and outdoor writer, Craig Medred, seemed to share the sentiments of many Alaskans about Rachel's involvement in the race.

Extractions: It's that time of year, while most people are thinking about sunscreen and mowing the lawn Iditarod mushers are focused on signing up. The first day to sign up was June 25th, and mushers camped out to be one of the first to register. Of the 56 mushers, 45 are veterans, 11 are rookies, 14 are female and 42 are males. Each September, Montana Sled Dog, Inc. hosts its annual Rendezvous and Symposium. Yukon Quest Champion Lance Mackey will be one of the guest speakers. This is held to promote sport-wide education on a number of subjects of interest to mushers. It is exceptionally well-attended. We also hold a trade show and offer a training camp for rookies to Race to the Sky.

The musher stands on the rear of the sled, his face almost completely covered against the bitter cold, his arm crooked around the handlebar so he can doze without falling off. There's a rest stop a few miles ahead at Kaltag, and the team is making good time. In only an hour or so, he can bed down the dogs, sip a cup of hot chocolate, and grab a few hours of real sleep before hitting the trail that crosses the Nulato Hills on the way to Unalakleet. Then it's less than 270 miles along Norton Sound to Nome, the end of the trail, the end of the adventure. The Iditarod began in 1967, the centennial celebration year of the purchase of Alaska from Russia, as a project of Joe Reddington Sr. and history buff Dorothy Page. Reddington wanted to revive sled dog racing and the culture it represented and Page was looking for an event to honor the mushers and the dogs who played a large part in the settlement of the state. The race was patterned after the All-Alaska Sweepstakes races held early in the century. The new race was named the Iditarod Trail Leonhard Seppala Memorial Race to pay tribute to the prospectors who boosted frontier economy by discovering and mining the gold in them thar hills and to mushers who carried diphtheria serum to Nome in 1925 to end an epidemic among the natives in that city. Seppala ran the last leg of the serum journey. Iditarod is a small town in the state's interior, taken from the Eskimo word Haiditarod, meaning a far, distant place. Gold was discovered in a creek near the town in 1908, and the great Alaska gold rush was on.
