It's over a thousand miles from Anchorage to Nome via the presently used Iditarod Trail race route. It crosses two mountain ranges, passes through ice-locked wilderness areas, and winds over 200 miles along the mighty Yukon River. The mushers leave civilization at Knik and there's only small towns and villages to break the monotony of traveling in bone-chilling cold until they reach the historic goldrush town of Nome, perched on the shores of the Bering Sea. The historic Iditarod Trail was established by its many travelers and freighters. But having a sled dog race over the trail was initiated by Dorothy Page, a history buff who lives in Wasilla. Back in 1964 Page was serving as chairman of the Wasilla-Knik Centennial Committee and also as secretary of the Aurora Dog Mushers Club. As a spectacular centennial year project, Page talked to many people about re-opening the Iditarod Trail, beginning at Knik, and having a sled dog race to call attention to Alaska's past and the part the mushers and their dog teams had played in opening up the Territory of Alaska. Page could see that raising sled dogs and mushing were going downhill due to the wide use of snowmachines. She felt mushing needed to be revived before the dogs were "completely run down by snow machines." But Page also knew she could talk on forever about a big new race unless she could get a musher interested in her "weird idea. "

This race originated to commemorate the heroic efforts of early sled dog mushers to deliver serum to Nome from Anchorage during a diphtheria epidemic. In the odd years, mushers take a southern route. In the even years they take a northern route. The trail splits at Ophir and connects at Kaltag. The Iditarod has a rich history. It started in 1967. At that time the race was only about 27 miles long. It was run along a small section of the actual Itidarod trail. Now they start in Wasilla right outside of Anchorage. The story of that great first race is as follows: In 1927 in Nome there was a diphtheria epidemic and they had run out of serum. Many people were dying, including a lot of children. Nome sent an urgent request to Anchorage asking them to ship more serum right away. Anchorage tried to send it by ship but the pack-ice was getting too thick, then they tried by plane but they were having too many blizzards. Finally as a last resort they sent it by train. Unfortunately the train stopped at Nenana a town 674 miles away from Nome. They decided to use dog-sled for the remaining 674-mile distance. A musher met the train, and loaded the serum on his sled, he then traveled to the next check-point. There another musher took over. And so on and so on. After a few days the last musher came into Nome. This musher's lead dog was the famous Balto. The serum was delivered and Nome was saved from being wiped out.

His victories include not only the 1,049 mile Iditarod Sled Dog Race in 1993, 1996, and 1998, but also over two dozen first place finishes in races all across Alaska. During the past 20 years, Jeff has logged more than 100,000 miles on a dog sled. Jeff moved to Alaska in 1975 in search of adventure. He quickly became interested in dog sledding and Alaskan huskies, devoting all his spare time and money to building his own team, while developing a construction business. He began racing in 1980. His competitive nature had found a new outlet, and Jeff set his sights ever higher, entering his first Iditarod just one year later. In 1992 he decided to devote his full time and energy to training and racing, setting aside his construction business. He won his first Iditarod the following season. While on a training run in Denali National Park in 1980, Jeff's team became entangled with that of a new volunteer ranger, and thus he met his future wife. Donna Gates came to Denali after finishing her master's degree in Medical Illustration. Tim Hewitt and Tom Jarding are preparing for the annual "Iditasport Impossible" race that runs the same 1,100-mile course as the better-known Iditarod dog sled race. Three years ago, they trudged the course in 26 days, 20 hours and 14 minutes, beating the old record by two full weeks. The following year, Italy's Roberto Ghidoni broke their record with 22 days, 6 hours and 6 minutes. "It's the toughest race in the world," Hewitt said. "They went 15 years with no one completing the race on foot. In fact, there are more people who have walked on the moon than have completed this on foot." Racers from across the world will follow the route on mountain bike, skis or running shoes, towing sleds with equipment that will keep them alive in the Alaskan wilderness. The annual human-powered race will start a week ahead of the dog sled race next month.
