Contents Volume 7 (2004) Preferred characteristics in applicants for school library media specialist (SLMS) positions are studied in this article from three perspectives, that of the library school faculty, the library school student, and the school administrator. Surveys were sent to public high school administrators in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho; faculties of American Library Association (ALA)-accredited master of library science (MLS) programs; and students enrolled in ALA-accredited programs. Using a five-point scale, participants rated twenty-six qualities organized into five general groupings: education, experience, recommendations, involvement, and compatibilities. Faculty ( n =27), students ( n =142), and administrators ( n =26) agreed that the most valued SLMS job candidate would have the ability to work well with others and possess excellent managerial and technical skills. Differences in the three groups' perspectives suggest a lack of common perception of the role of the SLMS among school administrators, MLS students, and library and information science faculty and a need to align visions with national guidelines for the role of school library media programs in the educational mission of the school. Method Results Discussion Works Cited While studies of the actual practices used in filling SLMS positions are uncommon in literature, much can be found about the perceptions of school principals in regard to SLMSs and their roles. Related literature can also be found which summarizes how school administrators select teaching staff, what public and academic libraries seek in hiring librarians, and what students and first-year teachers perceive to be the qualities principals look for in hiring teachers. These related studies may give insight into how principals might choose SLMSs.

The program is administered by the Department of Education and is the first program specifically aimed at upgrading school libraries since the original school library resources program was established in 1965. Numerous studies* show there is a clear link between the quality of library media programs in schools staffed by an experienced school library media specialist and student academic achievement. School library media centers can contribute to improved student achievement by providing up-to-date instructional materials aligned to the curriculum and instructional practices, collaborating with and supporting teachers, administrators, and parents, and extending their hours of operation beyond the school day.

It offers bachelors degrees in four areas: advertising, journalism, public relations, radio/TV/digital media production. The curriculum is based on a premise that journalists, broadcasters, public relations professionals and advertising executives should be broadly educated. Accordingly, students must take at least 80 of the 128 credits needed for graduation outside the School. Students with degrees from the School of Journalism and Mass Media pursue careers with advertising agencies, radio and television stations and networks, film and video production companies, cable and satellite operations, newspapers and other print and online media, public relations firms, and as media specialists in non-profit agencies, private corporations and within the government. Extractions: Shirley Cobble, Director of Library/Media Services, shirley.cobble@isdb.idaho.gov The Idaho School for the Deaf and the Blind (ISDB) Library/Media Center provides a variety of resources and services to visually impaired/blind and deaf/hard of hearing individuals throughout the state. Services are offered to families and professionals, serving them on a local and statewide level. As a part of the state library system, resources are extended to all Idaho residents. The center is centrally located and houses four libraries; K-3rd grade, 4th grade through adult, K-3rd VI Library, Parent Resource Library. We have a media/captioned video area/storage area, teachers' materials area, TV Satellite/conference room, and a copy center. Our center is open from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm during the regular school days, 7:00-2:00 on Fridays. One of our library/media center's main goals is to promote reading with our students. In order to do so, a variety of methods and tools are being assimilated into use, including both the utilization and integration of technology as well as non-technological programs.

Students come from all over the state to attend this well known program.
