Controversy surrounding payments to K12, a politically connected curriculum and school-services company, has prompted internecine battles within the GOP-led state governments in Idaho, Florida and Arkansas. Legislatures, governors and education departments in the three states are squabbling about the amounts of taxpayer money being paid to privately held K12 Inc. to operate online public schools. The financial bickering is also causing a rift between fiscally conservative Republicans and GOP politicians who are enthusiastically trying to expand K12's presence in their states. K12 of McLean, Virginia, manages and provides the curriculum for the virtual schools, where kids access all course work and communicate with their teachers online. William Bennett, who was secretary of education under President Ronald Reagan, founded K12 in 1999. According to Bryan Flood, vice president of public relations and government affairs, K12 has enrolled 12,000 students in 11 states who take classes at home under a guardian's tutelage, and receive a computer and Internet access for free.
