The highly productive loess ranges from 5 to 130 cm deep (Williams 1991). Large areas of level land are rare. Higher elevations bordering the prairies such as the Palouse Range support an often dense coniferous forest.

From the northern Panhandle, where Idaho is about 45 mi (72 km) wide, the state broadens south of the Bitterroot Range to 310 mi (499 km) in width. The Snake River flows in a great arc across S Idaho; with its tributaries the river has been harnessed to produce hydroelectric power and to reclaim vast areas of dry but fertile land. To the north of the Snake River valley, in central and north central Idaho, are the massive Sawtooth Mts. and the Salmon River Mts., which shelter magnificent wilderness areas, including the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness, the Selway Bitterroot Wilderness Area, and the Idaho Primitive Area. In the central and north central regions and in the Panhandle there are tremendous expanses of national forests covering approximately two fifths of the state and constituting one of the largest areas of national forests in the nation. Idaho's jagged granite peaks include Mt. Borah, which is 12,662 ft (3,859 m) high. Hells Canyon, which at one point is 7,900 ft (2408 m) below the mountaintops, is the deepest gorge in North America. The state also contains Craters of the Moon National Monument and a protected grove of ancient cedars at Upper Priest Lake.

The chief city of the extensively irrigated upper Snake valley, Idaho Falls is the prosperous commercial and processing center of a cattle, dairy, and farm region that produces potatoes, wheat, sugar beets, and alfalfa. Building materials, food products, leather goods, and electronic equipment are manufactured, and tourism is important (the city lies near several national parks and major recreational areas). Nearby Idaho National Engineering and Environmental Laboratory, a national reactor testing station, is also a principal source of employment. Idaho Falls was originally a miner's fording point over the Snake River, first settled by Mormons. The impressive Idaho Falls Mormon Temple (opened 1945) is a prominent landmark. Several annual rodeos are held in Idaho Falls.

Extractions: WashingtonIdaho Partnership Project Strong commercial and cultural ties across the Washington and Idaho State line unite the Washington-Idaho Partnership Project study area. The primary focus area is the Spokane to Coeur d'Alene urban corridor that extends from Spokane County, Washington, to Kootenai County, Idaho. Both counties have mature geographic information system (GIS) programs and can provide significant data to the project. Pend Oreille County, Washington, and Bonner County, Idaho, lie north of the primary focus area and are included in the project to investigate data-sharing opportunities in areas with less mature GIS programs. Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles Digital Orthophoto Quadrangles Countywide digital orthophoto quadrangle (DOQ) mosaics were created from available 1-m digital orthophotographs covering the project area. Most of the available DOQs were created from 1998-99 vintage aerial photographs, with a few from 1992. Under a partnership agreement with Kootenai County, Idaho, 32 quarter-quadrangles were updated. The metadata (see Layer Metadata link on the viewer) lists the original source dates for all DOQs used in the mosaics. The mosaics were compressed at 10:1 using MrSID compression software. Some speckling in the mosaic images resulted from this compression. Future plans include serving uncompressed DOQs directly from the data server to avoid the speckling.
