Extractions: OVERVIEW OF RECREATION AND TOURISM ON THE SNAKE RIVER PLAIN Around the turn of the century, for example, Idahoans proposed setting aside Shoshone Falls as a national park in order to save it from the destructive processes of water-power projects. They also wanted to preserve the falls for its intrinsic qualities and its tourist potential. Though the movement failed, it reflected a change in perceptions about the value of the Snake River Plain. Of particular significance was that many of the natural wonder's numerous visitors hailed from Idaho. By 1890, the young state's population had increased by 171 percent over the previous decade, from 32,000 to 84,000; it had almost doubled to 161,000 by 1900, and leaped to 430,000 in 1920. Many residents lived in cities, a trend common in a nation now more urban than rural. Beset by big-city problems, Idahoans expressed an appetite for the outdoors and an affinity for rural virtues. [ Improved roads contributed significantly to these changes. The Good Roads movement flourished across the country in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Politically active reformers rallied for federal assistance to improve farm-to market routes and postal delivery to rural areasroads that would eventually lead urban dwellers from town to country. Overall, the highway movement reflected the beliefs of Progressive-minded Americans that better roads would improve rural life, stem the tide of rural migration to cities, and expand commercial opportunities for both rural and urban citizens. By doing so, good roads advocates helped form a national road building program run by the federal government, which, to this end, passed highway legislation in 1916 and 1921 to construct the nation's first road system. One paper examined both regional and functional aspects of the growth of cities in the Soviet Union and the other concerned the ethnic complexities of urban areas at the southern and western fringes of the country. He edited Economic Geography of the U.S.S.R . and added valuable maps, appendices and numerous footnotes to the text, which was first published in 1949. He made 14 trips to the former Soviet Union and gained the respect of scholars and others there as a serious and objective researcher. This was particularly impressive as it was achieved across an ideological divide fraught with official suspicion and wariness about divulging geographical data. Harris succeeded through the force of his personality and his direct and fair-minded scientific approach, said Michael Conzen, Chairman of the Committee on Geographical Studies at the University of Chicago. In 1962, Harris was editor of the English-language edition of

Extractions: Let's Talk About It Themes Tough Paradise Last Updated Contemporary writers John Rember, Gino Sky, and Tom Spanbauer draw heavily upon personal experience and Idaho geography in their fiction. By William Studebaker Life is opaque and dull compared to fiction. Fiction compresses and dramatizes. Fiction selectively alters what is left of life lived, memories and emotions, creating a synthetic but affirmable reality. Fiction can be as simple as mixing an acid with a base or as enigmatic as quantum physics. It cannot, however, be separate from mind: the writer's mind, the reader's mind. In order to appreciate fiction, minds must share some elemental data that turns what was written into what is read. Tom Spanbauer, John Rember, and Gino Sky draw heavily upon Idaho geography and their own lives. It is a suitable truth that finally creates fictional plausibility. The tricks to the trade are many, but none is so often tried as the manipulation of indigenous imagery and family crisis. Done correctly they construct a dynamic link, a fictional truth, between writer and reader. Tome Spanbauer, John Rember, and Gino Sky are three contemporary writers who draw heavily upon Idaho geography and their own lives to fuel their fiction. They write close to home.

The town changed its name to Eagle Rock after a rock island that was the nesting site for numerous eagles in the river 7 miles north. The Idaho Falls Electric Cooperative had not yet constructed the famous artificial falls now in place (as part of a modern power generation plant). The community's economy remained agriculturally focused until the Atomic Energy Commission opened the National Reactor Testing Station in the nearby desert in . The town subsequently became largely dependent on high-income jobs from "The Site", officially called the
