Our Northeastern Oklahoma (and Arkansas) was one area she felt might have a white Christmas. She generally felt that the whole US will have an unusually cold winter with ice storms, extending as far south as Austin, Texas. And that in some areas (Dallas was mentioned) that there will be several ice storms that come "like waves." Already we have seen unusually heavy snow in many parts of the country. And while I was working on this newsletter, we had an ice and snow storm that went as far south as Dallas (CNN reported it as going from Michigan to Texas). Will the rest of the winter bear out these predictions? We don't have any way of knowing. But the best approach is to prepared for the worst and hope for the best. A good approach to preparing for any emergency is to do a simple risk analysis for your area of the country and for any expected situation. Consider what might happen to cause an emergency? In preparing for a cold winter, what might happen to warrant it being considered an emergency?

This photo was taken soon after a major ice storm at the Tehachapi Mountain "antenna farm." All of the trees, antennas and guy cables are covered with a thick layer of ice. The massive weight of the icecoupled with the inevitable high winds that accompany ice stormscan destroy large trees (and antennas). Wind-driven moisture in low clouds and fog can cause a buildup of several inches of ice on one side of an antenna, tree or building. Aircraft pilots are well acquainted with this effect; they call it rime icing . It can cause disastrous airplane crashesand antenna crashes. Even this handrail on the deck of my cabin has heavy ice on the windward side, but almost none on top. This is NOT the result of a snowstorm This photo shows why antennas can be destroyed by ice. Note the pipe mast at right. It is less than two inches in diameter, but it has about four inches of ice on the windward side. There is no ice on the other side. The elements of this antenna (the horizontal aluminum tubing) are only about one inch in diameterand utterly incapable of supporting the weight of the ice. (This antenna failed soon after this picture was taken.) The photos below show what happens to antennas in a major ice stormthe sort of storm that occurs six or eight times a year at 7,000 feet elevation in the Tehachapi Mountains.

It is the result of water particles falling as snow, then encountering a layer of warm air where the particles melt into rain. However, before the rain hits the ground, it goes through a cold layer of air just before the surface of the ground. The droplets are cooled, forming supercooled drops, drops that are cooled to below freezing but are not frozen. When these supercooled drops hit the ground, they thin out and freeze, instantly, forming a thin film of ice. Both types, however, can be deadly. Even as a thin layer, freezing rain also known by the names of silver thaw or glaze is dangerous, which you've experienced yourself if you've ever tried to walk on a surface covered with the ice, or worse, tried to drive on it. But the real danger with freezing rain is the build-up of ice on trees and power lines. The weight of this ice is enormous, and can cause tree limbs to break and fall, even the entire tree, and power lines to sag and fall. In this situation, it would be called an "Ice Storm". Ice storm warnings are a product issued by the National Weather Service when freezing rain produces a significant and possibly damaging accumulation of ice.

Extractions: Ice laden trees around my house It was the evening of January 7, 1998 in the southern Rideau region when the power went out. That night the forest started to come down. For the next two days the forest took on a surreal crystal appearance with branches covered by up to 2 inches (50 mm) of ice. Every 20 seconds or so a crash would resound as another branch, too heavily laden with ice, cracked and fell to the ground, ice shards scattering on impact. The ice storm, the worst this century, plunged several million people into the dark in an area ranging from the Rideau region in the west, to the Maritimes in the east. The hardest hit area was from the Rideau through to the south shore of Montreal. The area south of Montreal, now known as the "dark triangle", is still without power (January 20), as is much of the rural Rideau region. The problem was a result of a trough of cold air sitting in the St. Lawrence lowlands. As moist, warm air from the south swept over the top of this cold air mass, rain fell, turning to freezing rain as it neared the ground, coating trees, power lines, and anything else it hit with ice. Normally, we would get one such storm and it would pass within a few hours. In this case, a series of ice storms swept the region, each adding a new layer of ice to already overloaded trees and power lines.

As tree limbs crashed down on the Bates Quad at the height of the storm, Bates arborist Bill Bergevin felt helpless. "You just wanted to yell out, 'Stop!'" he remembers. "But you knew it wouldn't help." The freezing rain began on Tuesday, Jan. 6, and ended late on Friday, Jan. 9. The National Weather Service office in nearby Gray recorded about 2.5 inches of rain during the event, much of which froze on trees like transparent coats of armor. Nearly six out of every 10 Maine residents lost electrical power during the storm, and while the main Quad lost power and phone service for just Thursday and Friday, some Bates employees who lived in surrounding communities went weeks without power. Even just off campus, homes were without power for a week. Psychology professor John Kelsey, just two blocks from campus on Pettengill Street, had no electricity for eight days. "After six days, the pipes burst and the house was flooded," he remembers. Still, this psych researcher had his work priorities in order: "My major concern at Bates was getting warmth to our rats in Carnegie."
