The Slalom, the Giant Slalom, and Super Giant Slalom requires skiers to maneuver skillfully and through a series of gates (poles with flags). This film was produced by Earth on Fire Productions , a company owned and operated by two former collegiate women ice hockey players. Owners, Bree Cheatham and Courtney King both played four years of Division I college hockey at Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts between 1993 and 1997. In 1997 they ended their college careers with an ECAC championship title. Both girls played hockey since they were very young and participated in both development camps and in USA Hockey tryouts for the U.S. Women's National and Olympic Teams since the program began in 1990.

Directory Because of its popularity in England, figure skating was on the program for the 1908 Olympic Games in London. When Antwerp, Belgium, hosted the 1920 Olympics after World War II, there was competition in both ice hockey and figure skating. Those sports could, of course, be conducted in rinks during the Summer Games. But other winter sports that were becoming popular in Northern Europe and the Alpine regions, such as skiing and bobsledding, obviously had to stay outdoors. After 1920, national governing bodies for such sports in several countries began talking about the possibility of a separate Winter Olympics. Top of Page The town of Chamonix, in the French Alps, planned a winter sports festival in 1924, when Paris was to host the Olympics. The Marquis de Polignac, a member of the International Olympic Committee, proposed to the IOC that the festival be formally recognized as the Winter Olympic Games. Another Frenchman, Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympics, was opposed to the idea. However, the IOC agreed that Chamonix could call its festival a "Olympic winter carnival."

In 1885, Montreal became the site for the first national hockey organization. The Amateur Hockey Association of Canada was founded and further reduced the number of players to seven. The sport's first league of four teams was formed that same year in Ontario. Ice hockey migrated south to the United States in the 1890s. The first known hockey games took place between Johns Hopkins and Yale Universities in 1895. Although hockey was a national pastime in Canada, the United States was the first country to organize a professional league. Formed in 1903 and based in Houghton, Michigan, the Pro Hockey League included teams and players from both Canada and the U.S. The league folded three years later, and in 1910, the National Hockey League was formed.

Vaarakallio's team-mate, Sari Krooks, also scored and put her fine performance down to a pre-game telephone call home to her four-year-old daughter, Annika. "She told me, 'Stop in front of the net and put the puck in the net,'" Krooks said. Krooks, who turned 30 last Monday, scored five minutes before the end of the match, after officials consulted a video replay to see if she had slipped the puck past Swedish goaltender Annica Ahlen. Sweet victory Despite the game's one-way traffic, the Finnish players ignored the game's historic aspect until it was won. "We were concentrating so much on the game, trying to take it as just a game, not as history at the Olympics," Krooks said. "Now that I start to think about it, it feels unbelievable. I get a little goosebumpy."
