Because fuel cells produce power without combustion, they are considerably more efficient than their internal combustion engine counterparts. Gasoline engines in automobiles are approximately 13 to 25 percent efficient. Amazingly, 75 to 87 percent of the gasoline you purchase does not participate in moving your automobile. A fuel cell attached to an electric motor can be in excess of 40 percent efficient, and fuel cells that can be used in automobiles and other vehicles are being produced with efficiencies of 45 to 58 percent.     Extractions: F uel Cell Resources By Aardduck Fuel cells are direct energy converters. An individual cell consists of an electrolyte sandwiched between an anode and a cathode. They can produce high-efficiency electricity with near zero emissions. This capability results from using an electrochemical reaction rather than combustion to convert fuel into energy. Fuel cells also generate high-temperature steam in addition to electricity, making them ideal for cogeneration. Basically, the fuel cell directly converts chemical energy into electrical energy. Most, such as those used on NASA spacecraft, run on hydrogen Fuel Cells are an old idea, whose time has come. The principle was discovered approximately 160 years ago by , Sir William Grove. Until recently However, their use was confined to the to exotic applications such as space travel Fuel cells excelled in space since the dawn of the U. S. Space Program. They provided electricity in all manned spacecraft since the Gemini project, including Apollo and the Space Shuttle. But the technology was immature and far too expensive for terrestrial applications. Hydrogen is difficult to store and distribute, so it would be much more convenient if fuel cells could use fuels that are more readily available. This problem is addressed by a a reformer. A reformer turns other fuels into hydrogen, which is then fed to the fuel cell.

About 30 people came to the hour-long talk on "Scientific Challenges and Research Opportunities in Hydrogen Energy Technologies," and many stayed afterward to discuss issues raised in the talk. SSRL Deputy Director Jo Stöhr introduced Schiros, saying that "the broader topic—the future of energy resources in the world—is an important one." "DOE has estimated that CO2 emissions will increase 60 percent in the next 50 years," Schiros said, "with potentially dramatic climate change consequences. This is why developing alternative fuel sources, like hydrogen, is so important." Schiros said she hoped her talk would inspire some SSRL researchers to work on effective means of making and storing hydrogen.
