Pf's Hydrangeas! Welcome to my Flower (and Tree and Shrub) Garden! And info about hydrangeas. Good luck and happy gardening! hydrangeas Hydrangea macrophylla http://pages.prodigy.com/gardenshop/flwr23.htm
Extractions: The Hydrangea Macrophylla (mak-ro-FIL-a) - with the rounded blue to pink balls (mophead), or the flattened flowers (lacecaps), is a prime example of a shrub that is better not pruned at all, rather than to be pruned badly or too much. There is only one kind of hydrangea that blooms pink to blue - it is called Macrophylla. All the other kinds of hydrangeas bloom white! The blue to pink is determined by soil pH - bluest color is produced in acidic soil, pinkest in alkaline soil. You cannot change a white blooming variety to blue or pink (and vice versa). Adding lime to the soil around the root area will encourage it to bloom more pink. Amending the soil with aluminium sulfate will encourage bluer blooms. This process takes about 1 year to show.

Mi-reporter.com - Hydrangeas Add Stature To Your Garden On gardening. hydrangeas have been dazzlers in American gardens for more than100 years. They add stature to gardens with their deciduous or semideciduous http://www.mi-reporter.com/sited/story/html/212921
Extractions: On Gardening Hydrangeas have been dazzlers in American gardens for more than 100 years. They add stature to gardens with their deciduous or semi-deciduous leafy bushes, as well as interest while in bloom and later when the flowers dry on the shrubs. While big blue balls may come to mind, the latest interest is for the lace-cap, vining and other varieties. With many, the flowers are influenced by the acidity of the soil; bluer with acid soil, the natural condition here in the Pacific Northwest. Pink is the standard with alkaline soil and can sometimes be achieved by adding two cups of dolomite lime each year and working it into the soil surrounding those plants that respond to color regulation. There are several cultivars that are stable in their color and are unaffected by soil pH. These shade lovers can grow in full sun here in Cascadia if given ample water to keep their leaves from burning. But gardeners should conserve water by planting under more shaded conditions. Hydrangeas are easy to grow in rich, humus-laden soil. If planted in clay, add compost or composted steer manure. New plants can be propagated from cuttings taken in June or early July. The old-fashioned hortensia, or mophead hydrangea, H. macrophylla, grows to about 6 feet and comes with the familiar rounded heads of florets. These shrubs boast large leaves. A similar looking blossom is produced on the PeeGee, H. paniculata grandiflora, which is covered with huge white flower clusters late in the summer. This is one plant that can really put on the growth, to 25 feet under ideal conditions. There also is a shorter form called `Pee Wee.' Hydrangea macrophylla `Tricolor' has dark green leaves strongly marked with cream and chartreuse and it will light up a dull, shaded area. The lacy ring of large light blue sterile flowers surrounds the small blue fertile florets, called a lace-cap. The display blends well with the variegation of the leaves. Other varieties of lace-caps can be found with white, pink, violet or blue floral displays, sometimes with contrasting sterile florets and fertile flowers.
Extractions: Wooly Adelgids and Fiorinia Scale on Hemlocks (Tsuga) can be controlled if caught at the early stages of infestation. During March, after it warms up but before the new growth starts, spray the entire plant with dormant oil. It needs to dry 2-3 hours before the temperature drops below 32 degrees. A second application may be needed and can be applied in June to early July at a 1 oz. Dormant oil to 1 gal. of water ratio (follow the directions on the bottle regarding temperature range for applications). The spreading rate is approximately 3.5 oz. per gal. of water on your applicator. It is important to get as close to 100% coverage as possible. This means you'll need to spray up, under the needles. Dormant oil is organic and safe to use.

Extractions: Color landscape with hydrangeas 02:58 PM CDT on Thursday, April 28, 2005 Who wouldn't love them? With large, showy blooms in red, pink, blue or white, hydrangeas can be the center of attention in any landscape. Undaunted by the Texas heat, they continue their spectacular show from late spring through summer. Some species show off in the fall, too, when the dark green leaves turn red. Potted hydrangeas make great gifts for Mother's Day, and when planted in the garden they will brighten the landscape for years to come. Select a variety There are several main types of hydrangeas. The bigleaf or French hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla ) is the most popular, but oak leaf hydrangeas ( Hydrangea quercifolia ) and Pee Gee hydrangeas ( Hydrangea paniculata ) also are beautiful and useful. Both oak leaf and Pee Gee are large shrubs (up to 15 feet tall for Pee Gee) with white flowers. Bigleaf hydrangea has pink or blue flowers, depending on the amount of aluminum in the soil.

Pest management begins with healthy soil. It produces healthy plants, which are better able to withstand disease and insect damage. Organic fertilizers are safer than chemicals. Chemical fertilizers may, in time, build up salts. Apply compost to your garden about two to four weeks before you plant, giving the compost time to integrate and stabilize within the soil. Do not overfertilize garlic or it will become leafy. Use a high phosphorus fertilizer (the middle number) to promote bulb formation. New beds need soil amendments and double digging for that extra starting kick. Specimen plants which need a warmer climate zone than you have do well in sheltered, south-facing walls. The wall acts as a solar collector, absorbing heat during the day and releasing it at night, creating a small zone that is warmer than the rest of the garden. Outdoors potted plants and baskets are the only plants that need daily water on the hottest, driest days of the summer.

Extractions: TOM'S WEEKLY TIP MICHAEL DIRR SAYS blue hydrangeas sometimes come out with pink blooms, and pink hydrangeas sometimes come out blue. But that is not a problem with the plant - it's the soil. THE IMPORTANT FACTOR is the amount of aluminum in the soil. Soils with more aluminum in them as a trace element will have the blue flowers. A lot of experts will give acidity as the determining factor. High acidity (low pH) are bluer and low acidity (high alkalinity or high pH) are pink. But the acid is needed to make the aluminum soluble, so it will be absorbed by the plant. IF YOU WANT your hydrangeas blue, add a fertilizer for both acidity and aluminum. To top of story Hydrangeas are the hottest garden plant being sold right now. What's not to love about them? They have huge, attractive flowers ranging in color from white to pink to blue to red, they are hardy to zone 4, and the industry is putting out new varieties that are even better. That is one reason that the Maine Landscape and Nursery Association - the professional organization covering the industry - brought Michael A. Dirr to its annual trade show and business meeting earlier this month.
